Warfronts
On paper, it sounds like a very cool concept: a large battlefield where Horde and Alliance fight for supremacy over a whole area. Troops must be strategically distributed to capture and defend certain resources, such as sawmills or gold mines. Step by step, you enhance your base and the NPC troops until they can eventually overpower the enemies.
The goal was to bring Warcraft III into World of Warcraft – only with the difference that the player characters themselves are the “heroes” who ensure the success of the armies.
A great concept that stumbled over a small detail: reality.
Warfronts were so short-lived that Blizzard let them die even within the same expansion they were introduced in.
Data miners have repeatedly confirmed that the emergency brake was pulled very clearly here. Because in the game files, information about additional warfronts was found that never made it into the game. In addition to Darkshore and the Battle for Arathi Highlands, there was supposed to be another warfront in the Barrens and one near Silvermoon.
It is a shame that the feature did not resonate well with the community, but this was likely mainly due to its somewhat questionable implementation. Instead of bringing the “tactical war feel of Warcraft III” into World of Warcraft, the warfronts became a rather mindless zerg that simply overwhelmed the enemy positions. There was virtually no variation.
