Call of Duty: Warzone has been on the market for 1.5 years and has gone through quite a lot. The changes may not have been as pronounced as some players would have wished, but a lot has happened. MeinMMO would like to present you with 5 facts that were only a topic at release.
The release of Call of Duty: Warzone was already 1.5 years ago and the battle royale has been a hit from the start. But do you still remember how the release was communicated back then or which rifle was considered the first meta weapon? MeinMMO takes you on a little time travel back to the release.
Much has changed during this time – I now play a lot on PC, waiting for the new Warzone map and even played WoW in between. And Warzone has changed too.
AUG as the best weapon
What was going on? When we first published our article with the best weapons of Warzone, the submachine gun AUG from Modern Warfare was the OP weapon. With the 5.56 ammunition attachment, the weapon combined strong handling with a lot of damage and ruled as the best weapon for weeks after the release.
A few nerfs later, the AUG could no longer keep up with the stable alternatives when using assault rifle ammunition. Especially the Grau 5.56 then stood out and dominated almost the entire summer of 2020 in the meta.
Currently, the AUG-MP with the 5.56 rounds is considered a little insider tip for close combat (via YouTube).
Secrecy until the last second
What was going on? The release of Warzone was an absolute mystery. For months there were leaks, speculations, rumors, and somehow also hype. Although no one knew if the free-to-play battle royale from CoD would actually come.
The leakers “Tom Henderson” (via Twitter) and “TheGamingRevolution” (via Twitter) were two of the key players who had long reported about the release of Warzone with Modern Warfare. Even we from MeinMMO had no idea until the last moment when something would happen.
Even bugs in Modern Warfare were interpreted as hints about the release. However, the developers explained to us that there was nothing to it. Only one day before the official release was there finally the first trailer for Warzone released.
Self-extending queues
What was going on? When Warzone finally went online, many CoD fans couldn’t wait to storm the servers. Accordingly, there were some problems at the start.
Unlike in New World, where German players like to line up in a queue, the newcomers in Warzone were a bit more impatient. And actually, there weren’t really server problems, just the search was a bit tricky. Because the match creation took a little longer, many players left the search and looked for a new game.
This led to matches not starting because players were always missing. As a result, other players had to wait longer, who then also left the game after a while. A queue vicious cycle that characterized the first hours after the release of Warzone.
Only trio and plunder as modes
What was going on? Today you can actually choose between 4 team sizes in battle royale: solo, duo, trio, and 4-player. But the release players of Warzone did not have that luxury. There were only trio and plunder – also as a trio.
Gradually, the different team sizes were added. The developers mentioned back then that the different team sizes would also need to be adjusted a bit for balancing. Some modes would therefore only come later. Especially the duo mode felt like forever waiting back then:
- March 10 – Release with trios
- March 17 – Solo mode
- April 8 – 4-player are in the game
- May 30 – Finally came duos
Extremely easy victories through revival
What was going on? To conclude our little time travel, we want to show you the original father of the cursed stim glitches. Because at the start of Warzone, it was incredibly easy to win if you knew this little trick.
You could simply revive each other in the gas. After a revival, you had enough health points left to calmly help your teammate up, and then ask for a helping hand yourself.
The error disappeared very quickly from the game and was later replaced by the stim glitch. But with the original version of this bug, you didn’t even need the stim shoot. You just needed a certain lack of conscience.
Call of Duty: Warzone is about to undergo its biggest change and will receive a fresh map, anti-cheat, and even the polished engine of the new Call of Duty 2021 with the new Vanguard. It remains to be seen whether the revamped Warzone can evoke a similar feeling for us as at release. But I am very much looking forward to all the changes.
Feel free to share your experiences and stories in Warzone with us. How did you experience the first weeks in the game? What do you currently wish for Warzone?
