The new Battlefield V impresses with new innovations and features. If you are considering buying the latest installment of the series, you should pay attention to the following things.

On November 20, 2018, Battlefield 5 will finally be released for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. But why should one buy the game? What should one pay attention to? What’s inside and when can one get started?

What makes Battlefield V different from its predecessors

Battlefield veterans are certainly most interested in how the latest installment differs from its predecessor Battlefield 1.

The Gameplay

Time to Kill: Gameplay adjustments have been made to the Time-to-Kill. You are supposed to die much less quickly and stay in the game longer.

Better Revive: When you die, you now stay down and slowly bleed out. Meanwhile, you can cry out for help in a heartbreaking way. Additionally, any friendly teammate can revive you, not just Medics. However, Medics can do it faster and provide you with more health.

Different Health System: You no longer regenerate health automatically. Instead, you need Medics or health packs to fully restore yourself.

More Focus on Squad: Since you do not carry as much ammunition as in previous installments and all your teammates can revive you, it’s important to move and play together as a team. Even vehicles have limited ammunition again, so it’s very important for your team to regularly secure supplies.

A Touch of Fortnite: In Battlefield 5, you have tools with which you can build barricades at certain locations. This is reminiscent of Fortnite and adds more strategy to the game.

Spotting has been revised: You can inform your teammates where you spotted an enemy. However, the position is marked on the spot you are aiming at during spotting. The enemy is no longer marked with a marker and tracked automatically. If the enemy changes position, you need to correct the spot.

Reinforcements instead of Behemoths: The super vehicles known from Battlefield 1 have been removed. However, you can now achieve score streaks called “Reinforcements” and request particularly powerful tanks or even V1 rockets. This is only possible in the special Grand Operations mode and in “Conquest” and “Frontline”.

Grand Operations: This mode is somewhat like the Operations mode from BF1, but now you play three different map sections in a row and possibly a fourth section as “Last Stand” depending on the outcome. This recreates entire military operations that take place over several virtual days.

Scope and Atmosphere

The Maps: At launch, there will be 8 maps. These are located in France, Norway, Holland, and North Africa.

Female Soldiers: From the very beginning, you have the option to play as female soldiers. This has caused some controversies.

Familiar Weapons: In the game, you will again find numerous familiar weapons from World War II instead of the often bizarre guns from Battlefield 1.

The Business Model – Game as a Service instead of Loot Boxes

No Loot Boxes: EA has finally learned from past mistakes and does not offer loot boxes with game-relevant content. You can only buy purely cosmetic items.

No Season Pass: Instead of dividing players with optional purchases and a Season Pass, all content in Battlefield V is free for all players. This system is called Tides of War and is a live service that regularly provides free updates. Therefore, after launch, there will be:

• New War Stories
• New maps, including one for massive tank battles!
• New game modes, including Rush, a coop, and a battle royale mode

Battlefield V will have a Battle Royale mode

As a major innovation, Battlefield V will feature the  Battle Royale mode Firestorm. This has some peculiarities compared to the competition from PUBG, Fortnite, and Black Ops 4.  Instead of 100 players, the setup consists of 64 players in 16 4-player teams, and the terrain is partially destructible.

There will also be vehicles like tanks that you can use on the map. The tanks also crush buildings. Instead of a storm or an electric field, a flaming inferno limits the playing field, and you can achieve special objectives and earn special equipment.

Firestorm not included at launch: However, the Battle Royale mode will not be included in the launch version; it is set to be added later as part of a free update through “Tides of War”.

This is how the single-player mode of Battlefield V works

Unlike the major competitor Black Ops 4, Battlefield 5 will have a single-player story mode. This will unfold similarly to the War Stories from Battlefield 1.

You will play through the fates of various participants in the war in closed story segments. In Battlefield 5, however, it aims to portray the horrors of war even more intensely. Among the stories are:

• The desperate struggle of a Norwegian resistance fighter against the Nazis
• The fate of a French soldier from the colonies
• The story of a conscripted criminal in the British army
• The final battle of a German Tiger tank crew at the end of the war. This story will only come after the launch.

Especially the last War Story is a novelty, as here you also play on the side of the Germans. In Battlefield 1, the War Stories were solely focused on the Allies.

The initial opinions on Battlefield V

Since November 8, there has been early access to Battlefield 5. This led to some preliminary assessments and reviews. Overall, these are largely positive. The press especially praises the following aspects of the game:

• More content than expected
• Better story than in BF1, which portrays the war particularly drastically with gripping moments
• Good map design

This is what players say: Overall, the game was received much better than initially thought. This also applies to the opinions of the players, who are largely enthusiastic about the game and are pleased with the engaging gameplay and that the game runs quite smoothly. Additionally, the stories of the war narratives were generally well received.

This is how you can play Battlefield V earlier

If you are already very eager to play Battlefield 5 and can’t wait for the release on November 20, then you should be happy. Because there are several ways to play the game already or nearly a week earlier. Access to the game heavily depends on the version of the title:

• Those with a subscription to EA’s premium service Origin Access Premier can get started since November 8. However, if you only have the Basic version of Origin Access, your fun is limited to 10 hours.
• Those who have subscribed to EA Access on Xbox One can play 10 hours in advance starting November 9.
• Unfortunately, there are no such early accesses for the PS4.
• Those who pre-ordered the Deluxe version of Battlefield 5, by the way, can start on November 15 – on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
