What kind of game was it? City of Heroes wanted to offer a different scenario than fantasy or science fiction and therefore made players superheroes and supervillains who fought in and around a huge city.
Everyone could create their own superhero with unique powers and experience a story through quests. The conflict between heroes and villains also played a significant role.
When was it shut down? The servers were shut down on December 1, 2012. Publisher NC Soft had already announced the closure of the servers at the end of the year the previous summer, as they were closing the studio Paragon responsible for development at that time.
How can you continue to play? In 2019, private servers for the MMORPG City of Heroes came to the public limelight after running secretly for some time. The Homecoming server emerged as particularly popular because the operators were in dialogue with publisher NC Soft.
The server currently continues to run unchecked and is well received by the community.
