On Steam, there are thousands of games that are available for free or under 5 euros. MeinMMO author Lena introduces you to 5 of them that might seem quirky.
Of course, I could now list “normal,” grandiose games like Lost Ark or Ori and the Blind Forest, but I usually have a relatively quirky taste that some might describe as strange.
Therefore, I would like to introduce you to 5 quirky games from my Steam library that cost no more than 5 euros and to which I gladly return time and again.
Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition – 4.99 €
Quirky, yet celebrated by many, is Plants vs. Zombies. In the game, you need to place plants, vegetables, or other produce on your property while a wild horde of zombies attacks you in waves (via Steam).
Sounds strange, but it’s incredibly fun. The further you progress, the higher the difficulty level becomes, which should not be underestimated at all.
If you like tower defense games, Plants vs. Zombies might be just right for you.
Before a round, you must decide on different placeable items to take into battle against the wild horde. In adventure mode, you unlock other modes and additional items that you can use in subsequent rounds.
Plantera – 2.99 €
The probably quirkiest game on this list is Plantera, an indie game more about plants and animals than zombies. It’s a simulation game where you gradually build your own garden (via Steam).
It resembles a typical mobile game, as you can only plant various trees, bushes, and vegetables in certain locations. After that, you have to wait for them to grow to earn coins. With these coins, you can buy more plants, animals, and other bonuses.
If you enjoy casual games or are just looking for something involving cute piglets and grumpy-looking workers that can also run in the background, Plantera is just right for you. Either you click yourself and collect everything, or you let the hard-working workers do the job.
Vampire Survivors – 2.39 €
In this rogue-like survival game, you must survive for 30 minutes while being attacked by a variety of monsters (via Steam). Currently, you can choose from 7 different stages, each confronting you with different enemies.

Additionally, there are currently 30 characters, each starting with different abilities. While one whirls around with a whip, the next fires goods to incapacitate the enemies.
In the process, you collect chests, level up the character, and equip them with different items in each run, each bringing various effects. This way, you can gather numerous achievements and tackle the maps in different ways.
If you enjoy rogue-likes and have no problem with older pixel graphics, this early access game might be for you. If you’re looking for the same gameplay but prefer to aim and shoot yourself, you should check out 20 Minutes Till Dawn for the same price.
The Binding of Isaac – 4.99 €
What does the mother do with her son, why is he crying so hard, and why are there piles of poop everywhere? Many react something like this when they see The Binding of Isaac for the first time (via Steam). The game has now become a classic of rogue-likes, yet not everyone knows it.
The Binding of Isaac is one of the games I have played the most by far and still do. The original base game is already available for 4.99 €. However, there is a remake: The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (via Steam), which completely overhauled the base game and added many new things, but that costs 14.99 €.
You start as the boy Isaac, who flees from his mother and wants to defeat her. Different levels are generated in each run containing various items. With these items and your painful tears, you make your way to your mother’s foot and heart to destroy her.
This leads to many crazy runs with the wildest item combos.
Digimon Masters Online – free
Digimon Masters Online divides opinions. While some label it as a quick cash-grab, I’ve certainly had over 2,000 hours of fun in this MMORPG. As a Digimon fan, you will definitely enjoy this game (via Steam).
You can choose between different characters (Tamer) and select your partner Digimon to fight against other Digimon. It is currently the only online game of the franchise that is available in all countries.
Although another MMO called Digimon Super Rumble has been announced, it is still only playable in Korean and via roundabout methods here.
In the MMORPG, you level up well-known Digimon like Agumon, Gabumon, and Patamon as well as your Tamer through quests, battles, or items. Additionally, there are raids and dungeons where you can grind valuable items.
