Stormwind
Most people know Stormwind as the central capital of the Alliance and the seat of the High King. Many quest lines in new expansions start here, and every now and then players have to return to the city to visit important characters.
Stormwind was not destroyed during the time of World of Warcraft – but before that. Strictly speaking, Stormwind was destroyed during the time of Warcraft I when the Orc Horde came through the Dark Portal and overran the city.
The remaining people of Stormwind then fled to Lordaeron and sought refuge there.
During Warcraft II, Stormwind was then recaptured, but the reconstruction took several years and is only considered completed with the start of World of Warcraft.
The reconstruction of Stormwind is even one of the most important reasons why there are so many conflicts in the human kingdom. The thieving Defias Brotherhood was founded by former stonemasons and craftsmen who were simply not paid after the reconstruction of Stormwind – something that was instigated by the Dragon Lady Onyxia in the guise of Lady Katrana Prestor.
The effects of the city’s destruction and the Defias Brotherhood are still felt today. Even though Stormwind is intact and has withstood further destruction several times – as safe as it may seem, the kingdom of humans is not.
