4. Twisted Fate

When was he so strong? Twisted Fate also had somewhat different abilities at release than today. His probably strongest state was during the beta. Looking at the abilities today, one can only shake their head (via League of Legends Wiki).

What made him so strong? In principle, Twisted Fate was similar to his current version, but his abilities were arranged differently. In particular, his E and W abilities made him quite strong.

• The yellow card from his W could stun but was essentially AoE
• With a bit of luck, he could stun the entire team with it
• His old E was his current ultimate
• He could teleport anywhere on the map at level 1, with a cooldown of under 20 seconds
• Combined with higher damage, he was a true split-push monster

5. Kassadin

Original release: 08/07/2009 | Roles: Mid lane

When was he so strong? One of the best examples of overly strong champions is likely release Kassadin. The midlaner appeared in 2009 and his abilities differed slightly from today. Again, the timing was good (via Jeremy – Gaming Curious on YouTube).

What made him so strong? At his release, Kassadin could simply do things that no one could counter. He was so strong that even after nerfs, he reportedly achieved a ban rate of about 95% in SoloQ.

• His Q could silence for 2 seconds, meaning no abilities could be used
• His W not only returned mana but also stole it from the opponent
• His damage on abilities and AP scaling was incredibly high
• His ultimate cost less mana and had a cooldown of only 3 seconds
• With the ultimate, he had significantly more range at release and was one of the few mobile champions; today there are countless champions with many dashes, but in 2009, Kassadin was a novelty
