League of Legends celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2024. During this time, the game, the champions, and the items changed regularly, and there were moments when some champions were far too strong. We present 5 of them in this list.
What kind of list is this? In 15 years of League of Legends, there have been countless metas and therefore champions that were quite strong. Some releases or reworks caused certain champions to be overwhelmingly strong. It’s hard to imagine today, but in the past, LoL wasn’t always as balanced as it’s known today.
Due to the age of the game, it’s not always easy to find numbers from the past, which is why different sources were used for this list depending on the entry. The champions do not have a particular ranking on this list, as comparing seasons and patches based on strength is quite difficult.

1. Aphelios
Original release: 12/11/2019 | Roles: ADC
When was he so strong? Aphelios was released in December 2019 and was a champion that players feared from the beginning. He had a unique concept and was incredibly successful right from the start. In South Korea, he was statistically banned in almost every game by top players.
What made him so strong? Aphelios is and was complex, and at his release, that caused some problems.
- His multiple weapons made it hard to balance him without making him useless
- His abilities and combos synergized incredibly well with on-hit effects
- He could easily take out groups of enemies solo, thanks to the combo of flamethrower and ultimate
- Probably the biggest point: Aphelios was so complex that it required a lot of experience to play against him
