April Fools’ jokes can be frustrating. Sometimes, however, they are so good that something actually comes out of them. We present to you 5 April Fools’ jokes in video games that were actually implemented.
5. Google Maps Pokémon Challenge
What was this April Fools’ joke? On April 1, 2014, Google published a video showcasing a mobile game based on Pokémon. Players were to search for Pokémon all over the world and see them through the display of their phones.
Using augmented reality, it was not only supposed to be possible to see the little creatures but also to catch them.
What eventually came of it? The developer studio Niantic released the mobile game Pokémon GO in July 2016, effectively realizing almost exactly what Google presented two years earlier in the April Fools’ joke.
Pokémon GO became an extremely successful game where you search for and catch Pokémon all over the world using augmented reality.
