Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
Alternative names: Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu
Genre: Adventure Drama, Fantasy, Ecchi
Episodes: 48 (2 seasons)
Stream available on: Crunchyroll
The 34-year-old protagonist has achieved nothing in life. When he finally musters the courage for a good deed, the punishment comes immediately – he dies. But shortly thereafter, he finds himself reborn in another place, in a completely different world. Now as young Rudeus, he tries to learn the powers of magic and swordsmanship and find his place in this mystical land while getting caught in political conflicts and a lot of danger.
Who is Mushoku Tensei worth it for? Anyone inclined toward the isekai genre will likely find Mushoku Tensei quite satisfying. Because unlike many other representatives of the genre, this anime has a very complex, cohesive world that functions according to clear rules and reveals numerous secrets. The hero’s journey is the focus here – and that inherently leads to numerous adventures.
Especially the ecchi moments may take some getting used to, but that significantly lessens after the first few episodes. Then you have a really good, coherent world with interesting characters about whom you definitely want to know more.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Alternative names: Sousou no Frieren
Genre: Adventure, Drama, Fantasy
Episodes: 28 (Complete by the end of March 2024)
Stream available on: Crunchyroll
The world is saved. The demon king has been defeated, and the kingdom is now facing a time of peace. With that, the elven mage Frieren leaves her band of heroes and sets out to pursue her hobbies. But as a long-lived elf, she perceives time quite differently. When she returns, her former companions are already old and have little time left to live. Only now does Frieren start to realize that she has not used her time well. She embarks on a new journey to learn more about her group – and perhaps also more about herself.
Who is Frieren worth it for? Frieren is sometimes somewhat sarcastically referred to as “Side Quest – the anime” and basically, that describes Frieren very well. The focus of the story is no longer the fight against the great evil, but the smaller problems of the populace and the one or the other difficulty that has not been resolved by the band of heroes.
Anyone who enjoys a quieter hero’s journey with many emotional and profound moments should definitely give Frieren a chance.
KonoSuba
Alternative names: Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! | KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!
Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy
Episodes: 2 (2 seasons)
Stream available on: Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime (Freevee with ads or Aniverse),
Kazuma Satou has died – in a ridiculously silly way, as he was startled by a tractor. The goddess responsible for his reincarnation can’t hold back her laughter on her throne. However, she grants him a blessing. As her champion, Kazuma is allowed to be reborn in another world and must defeat the demon king. He is allowed to choose one weapon or ability from numerous options. But Kazuma feels insulted – and chooses the goddess herself.
From then on, the two try to fulfill their mission – and gather further adventures, all of which have one flaw or another.
Who is KonoSuba worth it for? Action and adventure are great – but often humor falls by the wayside. Not so with KonoSuba, as the series is in many ways a parody of existing “isekai” anime, without slipping into ridiculousness. The humor is coherent, the characters harmonize wonderfully, and anyone with even a slight sense of comedy will be excellently entertained here.
