Sony thoroughly revamped PS Plus in June 2022. However, not everything is perfect. In this article, you’ll find a handful of ways how PS Plus could improve in the future.
Sony had thoroughly revised its subscription model PS Plus in June 2022. Instead of PS Plus and PS Now, there is now only PS Plus, which is offered in three tiers:
- PS Plus Essential corresponds to the old subscription model, unlocks multiplayer modes, and includes 3 games at no additional cost per month.
- PS Plus Extra additionally offers access to about 400 games that you can play on PS4 and PS5. Besides the subscription, you don’t have to pay anything extra.
- With PS Plus Premium, you also get access to classics from Sony. Additionally, you can stream both the classics and the entire PS4 library.
For many players, the new subscription represents a meaningful innovation on PS4 and PS5. However, there are still ways Sony could further improve PS Plus and make it more accessible for players.

Make PS3 Games Downloadable
What is the problem? Those who subscribe to the most expensive subscription tier, PS Plus Premium, get access to what’s called the “Classics Catalog” from Sony. This is a collection of old games that were released for the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP. However, PS3 games can only be played via the cloud, which requires a fast internet connection.
What would be an improvement? Being able to install PS3 games directly on your own PS4 or PS5 would improve the situation for players who do not have a fast internet connection.
However, there could still be a problem: Emulation of PS3 titles requires a lot of power. And this could even overwhelm the PlayStation 5, as Digital Foundry notes in a video (via gamepro.de).
Free DLCs for PS Plus Subscribers
What is the problem? In both PS Plus Essential and the higher tiers, you have access to free games as long as you maintain an active subscription. However, the DLCs for the games are often not included, and you have to purchase them separately for the free game. This can add up significantly, as some “Season Passes” can cost as much as 30 euros.
What would be an improvement? Sony could offer the complete edition right away for certain games. This would make the Premium subscription more appealing to users interested in the games but unwilling to miss out on important DLCs.
Make PS Plus More Accessible
What is the problem? Every month, the game offerings of PS Plus are renewed, meaning: Some games are removed from the offering while new ones are added. In the Essential subscription, there are three free games every month that are swapped out the following month.
This is overall very confusing, as Sony indirectly points this out on the offers page of the shop, stating that the free games expire, or when games are about to disappear from the Extra or Premium subscription.
Subscribers have long been demanding more attention to the fact that games are disappearing from the subscription. Some players were surprised when the action RPG Greedfall disappeared from the subscription (via thegamer.com).
What would be an improvement? Sony could remind players that the free games of the month in the Essential subscription will soon expire.
Additionally, the notice that certain games will soon leave the PS Plus subscription, as was the case with Persona 5 from the PS Plus Collection, could be more strongly promoted by Sony on its consoles, as many players thereby miss good opportunities. This would also be a good service for players.
Improve Design on PS4
What is the problem? Hardware editor Chris Werian states on GamePro that the layout of PS Plus on PS4 is “terribly confusing” and would not be of much help. The tile for PS Plus does not remain in place like on PS5, but constantly shifts.
Each menu looks different on PS4, even though the same functions roughly lie behind the menus.
What would be an improvement? Sony could orient itself on the clearly designed menu of the PS5 on the PS4 and make the tile of PS Plus static in the menu. Then you wouldn’t have to search through the menu until you find the correct entry.
