The battle royale shooter Darwin Project is coming to an end. Due to too few players, the developers are halting further work on the game. And this just about four months after its launch on PS4.
What did the developers announce? On the official website of the online shooter Darwin Project, the developers must announce that the development of the game is being discontinued. The update that was released in April was the last.
We have been silent for a while and apologize for that. We want to keep you updated about Darwin Project. With a heavy heart, we have decided to stop developing new features for the game.

An early end
Is this unusual? Darwin Project has long struggled with declining player numbers, as can be seen from Steam Charts for the PC version. Therefore, the switch to a free-to-play model happened relatively quickly after release.
Even the Xbox version flopped, yet it is unusual that the shooter is being discontinued just four months after the launch on PS4. After all, during that time – in April – even the viewership on Twitch increased, according to Sullygnome.
What happens now with the game? The servers are expected to remain open until the end of the year. However, no further updates will be released.
The developers are now focusing on new projects, which have not been announced yet.
A shooter that deserved better
What is Darwin Project anyway? The battle royale shooter essentially works like a game show. You are dropped in the icy northern Canada and must survive there. Other contestants are your enemies.
A gamemaster can intervene at any time to create unforeseen situations. The game master can detonate nuclear bombs, shrink the game area, or distribute buffs.
Unlike other battle royale games where 100 players or more compete against each other, the number of players in Darwin Project matches is limited to 10.
How are players reacting? The community is mostly sad that Darwin Project is being discontinued, even though some saw this coming.
- BlubberyButts says on reddit: “The problem is that it is such an entertaining game. It’s a shame to see that it doesn’t continue to receive the support it rightfully deserves.”
- MaksimusVEVO agrees: “Damn, I can’t say that I’m surprised. But hearing it now hurts. Such a good game. It’s never received the love it deserves.”
- Northdistortion explains: “They just couldn’t compete with free-to-play AAA games like Apex, Fortnite, or Warzone.”
- Arstulex believes he has an explanation: “But guys… They tried everything… Except listening to the community.”
That Darwin Project is not a bad game but simply didn’t get the attention that the battle royale shooter deserved can be read in the MeinMMO list of the 6 MMO gems on Steam – Good online games that hardly anyone plays.
