CD Projekt Red promises investors that Cyberpunk 2077 continues to be a top priority in 2021. More than half of the original team, about 300 people, are still working on the sci-fi epic. However, we at MeinMMO ask: What about the multiplayer online game for Cyberpunk 2077?
This is the situation:
- Cyberpunk 2077 was the most anticipated game of 2020. However, controversies overshadowed the launch. The versions for PS4 and Xbox One performed so poorly that they were removed from stores. Law firms announced they would sue CD Projekt Red: The game company misled investors.
- Originally, CD Projekt Red intended to release an “online multiplayer” mode for Cyberpunk 2077 as a separate “AAA” project, but due to release issues, it suddenly stated that it wanted to take a different direction.
- In a new conference with investors, CD Projekt Red reaffirms that it continues to work with 300 people on Cyberpunk 2077. However, the focus has apparently shifted significantly.
These are the new updates: The head of CD Projekt Red, Adam Kiciński, addressed investors in a conference call to reflect on the first quarter of 2021 and open a perspective for the coming months.
Cyberpunk 2077 remains the main topic at CD Projekt Red. Looking back at the past months, it emphasizes that it has primarily focused on the stability of the game.
In response to inquiries, it assures the investor representatives that about 300 people continue to work on Cyberpunk, approximately half of the original team. They are working on the “next-gen” edition, among other things.
Expansions for Cyberpunk 2077 are mentioned, multiplayer is omitted
What about multiplayer? The planned multiplayer mode was not a topic at the investors’ conference. The inquiries were rather about when Cyberpunk 2077 would return to the PS Store.
CD Projekt Red hints at bringing “paid, large DLCs” for Cyberpunk 2077, comparing it to the Witcher 3 expansions “Blood and Wine” and “Hearts of Stone.” If they release such larger expansions for Cyberpunk, they will not be free.
Cyberpunk 2077 Online seems to be far away
What does this mean for multiplayer? Those looking forward to the multiplayer mode of Cyberpunk 2077 can take away two things from the new information:
- On one hand, CD Projekt Red continues to work on Cyberpunk 2077 – they are not giving up on the title
- It seems, however, that the current focus is on improving the single-player game and developing paid DLCs
The work on the multiplayer component is currently not reflected in the presentation and plans of CD Projekt Red.
If everything had gone “according to plan,” the multiplayer mode would probably take up a significant part of such a conference, as the experience with titles like GTA 5 Online has shown that there is big money to be made here.
However, as things have actually unfolded, CD Projekt Red’s priorities have currently shifted towards the single-player mode and damage control.
In another presentation, it was stated that CD Projekt Red intends to focus on bringing “all game franchises online one day” – as it currently sounds, that “one day” is still far in the future.
Cyberpunk 2077 rethinks multiplayer mode – postponed or canceled?
