Weapons are a central theme in many MMOs and often responsible for some discussions. We show you 3 weapons that probably every player knows and loves – or hates.
The selection of weapons in MMOs seems inexhaustible. There are games with crazy weapons, simply incredibly many weapons, huge weapons, glowing weapons, exploding weapons – the list is long.
However, there are some that every player knows, as long as they have played the games. Often the weapons are even familiar to you, even if you have never held the game in your hands. We have selected 3 such guns and swords for you and also took a look beyond the classic MMOs.
Gjallarhorn – Destiny
As an iconic weapon in the first year of Destiny, the “Gjallarhorn” has remained in the memory of many fans. It returned in the third year to the game – as an Iron version. It was no longer a random drop, but tied to a quest.
This is what the “Gjallarhorn” can do: This weapon is a rocket launcher. It has high maximum damage and homing projectiles. In addition, its rockets can split into cluster shots.
This is where the name “Gjallarhorn” comes from: “Gjallarhorn” is originally the horn of Heimdall. You know this bridge guardian from Norse mythology or from the Thor movies. Heimdall blows into the horn to warn the gods of the apocalypse, Ragnarök.
Whether the “Gjallarhorn” will also find its way into Destiny 2 is not confirmed yet. However, players remain hopeful, as there seem to be hints.
Thunderfury – World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft, as one of the largest and oldest MMORPGs, has influenced many players. The list of coveted weapons is long here as well. Many wished to obtain the “Frostmourne” of the Lich King, alongside his steed. Another popular weapon that was achievable is the “Ashbringer” of the Paladins.
One of the most coveted weapons from WoW Classic was probably “Thunderfury”. The “Blessed Blade of the Windseeker” is a legendary sword that you can obtain through a quest.
This is what makes “Thunderfury” special: This weapon has a chance to unleash lightning. These cause nature damage and jump to nearby enemies. This, in turn, reduces their nature resistance, and the main target is enveloped in a vortex. This vortex reduces its attack speed for a certain time.
These features made “Thunderfury” a very popular weapon for tanks. But also warriors or rogues tried to get their hands on the “Blessed Blade of the Windseeker.”
And that was not easy at all. You had to complete a long questline for this. And to even start it, you needed to collect two items from bosses in the level 60 raid “Molten Core”.
Infinity – Guild Wars 2
The great sword named “Infinity” is one of the most popular weapons in Guild Wars 2. It belongs to the legendary swords and has shaped the game due to the incredible time investment that it entails.
This is what makes Infinity special: Depending on the time of day, “Infinity” takes on the appearance of “Darkness” or “Sunrise”. At night, it has the dark glow of one, while during the day it has the bright shine of the other sword.
Additionally, “Infinity” has a glow effect at the hilt and its own footprints that you leave behind while walking.
This is why obtaining “Infinity” is so difficult: You can only get this weapon if you have built two other legendary weapons beforehand. You heard that right. For the sword, you first need the weapons “Darkness” and “Sunrise”, which you can merge into “Infinity”.
Thus, you had to invest a lot of time and money. Forging a legendary weapon in Guild Wars 2 requires many components, including a so-called “Precursor”. This is also a weapon that you can then further develop with the corresponding materials. For “Darkness” it is called “Dawn” and for “Sunrise” its name is “Morningstar”.
Obtaining this base weapon is already a mammoth project for many players. The introduced treasure hunt has made it easier in later years to get a “Precursor”. However, a lot of work is still behind it.
Additionally, it takes a lot of time to collect the materials for forging. And you need to do that twice. At the end of your journey, however, you have a sword that is not only very strong but also brings impressive effects.
A little bonus
Of course, not only classic MMOs offer legendary weapons and items. Other games also have weapons that have been etched into video game history forever.
Energy Sword – Halo
A fan favorite in video game history is the Energy Sword from the Halo series. Besides firearms, you can also pull out a sword here. This has remained consistent across the various games and has been very popular.
This is what makes the Energy Sword special: The sword brings a nice glow. Depending on the Halo installment, this effect is stronger or weaker. Furthermore, it illuminates the surrounding area in almost every game, a nice side effect in dark places.
Over the years, the design of the Energy Sword has changed somewhat. The edges have been made sharper or rounder at times. In addition, the sound of the sword has changed from a gas-like noise to that of a lightsaber.
As is typical for a sword, you can perform melee attacks with it. With the Energy Sword, the player can move forward very quickly, and depending on the Halo installment, the attack may not even be blockable.
This is how popular the Energy Sword is in the community: Even toy stores sell replicas of the Energy Sword. Additionally, there are countless tutorials on how to create your own version. This can be done with all sorts of materials, and there are even instructions for 3D printers. The guys from “Man at Arms”, a YouTube channel, have also taken on the Energy Sword and forged it:
Blue Shell – Mario Kart
A classic MMO is Mario Kart, but also in the racing game, there are some legendary weapons. At the top of the list: The blue shell. This little monster has probably destroyed many friendships. Nowadays, you can play Mario Kart online against opponents from all over the world. At least this way, you only destroy the relationship with strangers.
This is what the blue shell can do: With this weapon you can knock out the player in first place in Mario Kart. The blue shell targets the leader and can put other players in distress on the way there. Upon reaching the first place, it behaves similarly to the other shells and throws its target off the track. This has already cost many players their leading position and caused screams.
This list can of course be extended indefinitely. The history of video games has brought forth many good as well as less good games – a matter of taste. Each of them has its set of weapons that influence players in their own way. And now it’s time to start farming! Somehow I’ve gotten the urge to log back into Guild Wars 2.
