Our author Schuhmann says that as a casual Guardian, he likes three things about Destiny 2: the new mode Gambit, pulse rifles, and the damn Vestian Dynasty.
This is how I play Destiny 2: I play Destiny 2 quite casually and don’t stress myself too much. My Titan has casually played through the base game, then dipped into the expansions “Curse of Osiris” and “Warmind,” and has occasionally done a flashpoint. But since Forsaken, I have been regularly playing him in the evenings.
About every second or third evening, I play two to three hours of Destiny 2.
I enjoyed playing through the campaign relaxedly. However, I think I over-leveled the enemies halfway through the story missions, making the campaign easier towards the end than at the beginning. That was a bit odd.
Now I chase milestones, play strikes, a bit of Gambit, complete flashpoints, and grab whatever loot is floating around with the Vagabond and Zavala.
I’m at a power level of about 522 and play without much ambition. I’m a typical evening Guardian.
Destiny 2 in the MeinMMO editorial team: Since we have closely covered Destiny at MeinMMO since 2014, we have gained many authors over the years who know our site about Destiny. Therefore, we constantly have discussions about Destiny in our daily work. And it’s not as if everything is rosy.
Even our community manager, Irina, has a strong opinion about the game and has been complaining for a year that there are no nice Hunter cloaks anymore. And when Robert gets going, there seems to be no end in sight.
While the hardcore players in the editorial team, Sven, Robert, and Micha, can talk for hours about weapons and lore, I just want to have a bit of fun in the evenings.
However, during discussions about what Bungie could possibly be thinking and what they have done wrong again, I enjoy joining in.
Three things I like about Destiny 2
Pulse rifles, just cool: My favorite weapon type is the pulse rifle. I ran around with a standard one all the time and now switched to “Drained” after our experts recommended the weapon to me.
The pulse rifle is a wonderful weapon for any occasion and just feels right.
The gunplay of Destiny has often been praised and indeed, it is simply fun to shove one, three, or four bullets into a Cabal’s throat.
Overall, the enemy races and the various tactics they require are a major appeal of Destiny for me.
With the pulse rifle, I can either stay back, aim and shoot thoughtfully, or wildly spray at close range.
How much I like the pulse rifle became especially clear when I had to play for the quest for the “Pikass” with hand cannons. At that time, I only had the Scarlet from an earlier DLC in my collection and was supposed to kill a lot of enemies with it first in Gambit and then in Strikes.
I barely managed to complete that, but now to get x kills in the Crucible with the hand cannon? I praise the pulse rifle.
I also find the quests a bit strange: With the Scarlet, I had to rush into close combat, which made me feel like a burden for the group during strikes and Gambit, like a Harakiri rabbit.
I didn’t do badly, but I felt I was playing much more offensively than I usually do with the pulse rifle. Often, defensive play would have been better for the group.
My highlight in Destiny 2: I associate a kind of love-hate relationship with the Gambit mode. On some evenings, the mode clicks perfectly. You feel that everyone on the team is pulling in the same direction and working together towards a common goal.
The mob hordes stand no chance when 3 or 4 Guardians coordinate their efforts. The moment you then collectively turn in the loot with a “bank,” feels really cool.
However, there are also matches where you have 2 total failures in the team who only want to complete certain quests and then just lounge around the invasion portal hoping that the others gather motes so that the portal opens.
Also, the ancient one either doesn’t fall at all or falls within seconds if the right tactics are applied perfectly.
Moreover, invaders, especially with the Sleeper, seem to be extremely strong. However, even I as a casual player can still take down 2 or 3 enemies if I go over and activate the Titan super. As a Hammer Titan, I slam flame waves into the ground that nicely roast the enemies.
Admittedly, sometimes I get so excited about enemy contact that I mess up a jump and fail miserably. Those are the moments I’m really glad not to be a streamer.
Overall, I find Gambit a fast-paced and exciting game mode and I look forward to logging in and seeing that there are quests waiting for me that bring powerful items. And if an evening doesn’t go well, I just call it an early night.
My favorite weapon: I have fallen in love with the Vestian Dynasty, a pistol that Petra Venj gives out in the story progression.
I was already teased a bit by my colleague Micha, who wrinkled her nose at me and asked what I see in this weapon. Apparently, there was something buggy about it, and it was then rewarded with the same roll that everyone already had.
But I really like the Vestian Dynasty.
While others find the bow in Destiny 2 amazing, I love everything about the pistol. The reload animation is simply cool, the feel of the shot is great, and sometimes enemies explode due to Dragonfly, even though you don’t really know what exactly happened.
From much contact with the Guardians in our community, I know that you can play Destiny in many different ways, and some are fiercely rushing towards power level 600. For me, it is currently a very relaxed and casual game after work.
Three years ago, we had an article from a casual Guardian who shared his adventures in Destiny 1. I’m sure he would also find a lot of joy in Destiny 2:
