And the worst part: You may get a legendary fan-favorite for your team, who may even have been one of your favorite players. However, on the pitch, the card is of no use at all.
An overhaul of the icons seems long overdue. Many players in the FIFA subreddit feel the same way. Both a re-evaluation of various player stats and a revision of options like Icon Swaps or Icon SBCs would likely be things many players would like to see.

The fact that the values are no longer moving makes sense – after all, the performances of players do not change over the years as they are based on past epochs – but it hardly matches the gameplay in FUT.
Just look at cards like Puyol or Nesta. Absolute world-class center-backs who were among the best on the pitch during their respective eras. Yet in FIFA 22, they are outranked by players like Kimpembe – simply because he has higher pace, a better body type, or other detailed stats.
This can also be applied to other players. Take Miroslav Klose for example. The man is the all-time top scorer in FIFA World Cup history, yet he falls behind strikers who have achieved far less in FIFA.
Also players like Litmanen, Lineker, Scholes, Owen, or van Nistelrooy rank in FIFA’s popularity rankings at depths that should not be possible for icons given their legendary status.
There is basically a need for reevaluation or adjustment. Because some icons simply do not reflect what made them exceptional compared to players who achieved far less in their careers.
2. The effort does not do justice to many icons
Here we need to distinguish: Namely between top icons like Ronaldo and cards that do not fit well into the FIFA meta. While high effort for some of the best cards in the game is certainly justified – or at least more justifiable – it is already extreme what is asked for weaker icons.
Especially at the beginning of the game, where “weaker” icons would actually pay off because they have not yet been overtaken by any high-powered special cards, they are still exorbitantly expensive. You should not expect to find icons in packs – they are incredibly rare.

The alternative ways to obtain such icons would be Icon SBCs or the Icon Swap. However, they:
- Come too late in the “FIFA cycle” – often when the value of the icons has already dropped.
- Require an effort that is simply not worth it for many cards.
The Icon SBCs for specific, strong legends are often extremely expensive. They consist of ridiculously many or highly rated teams that you have to submit, making it hardly feasible or worth it to swap.
And the legends in the Icon Swaps are either too weak for the current state of the “Power Curve” or simply require way too many Icon Tokens. Here, you have to slog through sometimes incredibly time-consuming, less entertaining tasks to get the top icons from the swaps.
Unless you opt for the “random variant” – that is, the Icon Packs. And that brings us to point 3.
3. Nothing is more frustrating than a lost icon roulette
One option to obtain FIFA icons is through SBCs that grant an Icon Pack. You can also get them thanks to Icon Packs with specific values from the Icon Swap, which cost fewer tokens. Although they still require a lot of effort, they are at least somewhat easier to achieve.
These packs then include a random icon. And that is of course enticing: Because here you have the chance to pull an absolute top icon. So, theoretically.
But those who know the pack odds in FIFA 22 know: Absolute top cards are not the rule, but the exception.
It happens all too often that you end up with not Ronaldo, Puskas, or Zidane, but rather Lampard, Schweinsteiger, or Klose, who simply do not provide any advancement in FIFA.
And the worst part: You may get a legendary fan-favorite for your team, who may even have been one of your favorite players. However, on the pitch, the card is of no use at all.

Icon cards in FIFA 22 are actually meant to showcase the performances of legendary players on the pitch. However, many icons nowadays hardly do justice to their real-life counterparts, says MeinMMO author Max Handwerk.
Icons made their debut as “Legends” on the Xbox consoles in FIFA 14, and since FIFA 18, they have been available on all platforms: the “Icons.” Some of the best players to ever step on the football field.
Since then, the field of icons has been steadily growing. Renowned names like Zidane, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, or Cantona can be signed in FUT to strengthen players’ Ultimate Teams.
And yes, some of these icons are among the best cards you can have in the game. There is no doubt: Ronaldo, Pelé, Maradona, Eusébio, Gullit, Zidane, and many other legends can be a seriously powerful addition to your team. Currently, only the new TOTY cards are at such a level.
At the same time, there are simply too many icons that can no longer keep up with the “Power Curve” in FIFA – and that, despite still being hard to obtain. Several issues are dampening the mood around icons in FIFA.
1. Some icon cards are simply outdated or do not fit FIFA
A problem with the icons is their largely static values for years. Comparing the list of icons from FIFA 18 with the icons of FIFA 22, one can see: Icons that were already present in FIFA 18 have at most minimal to no changes to the stats of their Base, Mid, and Prime cards.
One exception is the Moments cards, which are improved again, but become available only later in the game. However, it should also be mentioned that they are so rare that they even fueled a black market scandal in FIFA 21.
