Ship of Heroes – Started last, finished first?
What is Ship of Heroes? Ship of Heroes aims to evolve the concept of City of Heroes, offering more significant decisions, new settings, and better graphics.
Much of the gameplay takes place within a massive spaceship. It has different levels, each hosting various civilizations and small worlds you can explore. During special events, the ship is also supposed to land on planets.
The MMORPG offers you:
- A very detailed character editor
- 4 base classes: Tank, Brawler, Devastator, Supporter
- Diverse content like Daily Jobs, Crafting, or an Auction House.
- A major focus on teamwork.
Who is developing it? Behind Ship of Heroes is the studio Heroic Games. Some of the developers have previously worked on Halo 5, Resistance 3, or Command & Conquer.
The game launched a Kickstarter campaign in April 2017, which fell short of the desired amount. Nonetheless, the studio persisted and now has the best status of the three superhero games.
What is the current status of the game? There are many videos giving insights into the development of Ship of Heroes. So far, there is already:
- A functional game world and a matching UI
- A class system and combat animations
- A working group system
- A global auction house
All this, along with the entire game world, already gives a quite finished impression. In January 2020, the developers announced an update to the engine to Unreal Engine 4.
What does the future look like? On the official website, the plans for a release only go up to December 2018. Previously, it was detailed about which steps were to be taken and which have been made. Since then, it has been quiet on this particular page.
However, in the news, you can find current blog entries about the game that include the latest beta tests. In March, a two-week event took place, in which all interested parties could participate. According to their statement, 1,277 players took part in the event, with more than 25 reaching the maximum level of 20 (via Ship of Heroes).
So far, Ship of Heroes seems to be the most advanced of the three.
