More than 3 months have passed since Warcraft III: Reforged was released. Have the patches helped? Or is the game still teetering on the edge?
For many real-time strategy fans, Warcraft III: Reforged was supposed to be the great gaming revelation. As we all know, the launch at the end of January became a disaster and led to devastating reviews. However, the developers promised that they would continue to work on the game and regularly bring patches that would bring back missing features.
After more than 3 months, it was time to take another look at Reforged and check what the patches have improved.
The disappointing answer upfront: Not much.
What has been improved? Although there have been a number of patches, none of them have really satisfied the community. Typically, these were detail changes that replaced issues with graphics and faulty animations. There were also some serious bugs, such as incorrect unit colors in PvP matches.
Many of the “desync issues” that only occurred when using the new graphics and even led to the cancellation of matches in tournaments have since been fixed. However, they still aren’t completely gone, which is why many are opting for the classic graphics.
A few fundamental functionalities have also been restored. Custom maps can now be played in single-player again – but that’s about it.
What is still missing? Primarily, the features that are desired in the competitive scene are still missing. A profile page for your own account with statistics is still missing. However, it wouldn’t serve much purpose, as there is no “ranked game mode” or ladder. Here, fans had to create their own systems.
The major changes to the campaign, such as new camera control and new design, are also not present – although one wouldn’t really expect that.
This is how it looks at the moment: The sad conclusion is that Warcraft III: Reforged is still not a worthy remake of the classic after more than 3 months. While the developers have kept their promise to deliver patches, the crucial features are still lacking. The competitive scene, which has kept Warcraft III alive for nearly two decades, is particularly suffering right now.
While they are managing with their own ranking and ladder system, it increasingly raises the question: Why can the community achieve in a few days what Blizzard developers haven’t managed in 3 months?
It is to be hoped that Warcraft III: Reforged will somehow turn things around. Currently, it must be said that it looks rather bleak and that the game is probably not recommended. It simply lacks too much in too many areas.
Warcraft III: Reforged remains (for now) one of Blizzard’s darkest hours. But perhaps a few of the 2,000 new jobs will be given to people who will lead the strategy title to new glory.
If the state of the game changes, we at MeinMMO will of course report on it.
