In 2024, many MMORPGs received an update. Three formerly popular online role-playing games were not in the big spotlight, but still delivered. MeinMMO shows you where getting started is particularly worthwhile right now.
While 2024 was not filled with MMORPG releases, Throne and Liberty was able to excite many players, especially in the second half of the year. Also, Tarisland, which still is considered a WoW clone by many players, experienced a brief hype.
Otherwise, 2024 likely consisted for many players of updates for their respective favorite MMORPG. In Final Fantasy XIV, players were provided with the Dawntrail expansion and in WoW, there were also many new contents with the expansion “The War Within”. Or take Janthir Wilds for Guild Wars 2, Gold Road for ESO, and “Land of the Morning Light: Seoul” for Black Desert.
Three other MMORPGs flew under the radar in 2024, although getting started there is now truly worthwhile. We present them to you.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
What kind of game is this? Star Wars: The Old Republic is a theme park MMORPG set in the “Star Wars” universe. At the beginning, you must choose whether to play on the good side, with the Jedi, or on the dark side with the Sith.
The MMORPG shines mainly due to its fully voiced story, which allows you to choose from at least three different responses in dialogues. Your decisions in the story also slightly change its outcome. Each of the 8 character classes has its own main story as well as a continuing plot thread that connects in the expansions.
In multiplayer, the MMORPG offers not only 12 raids – with 8 or 16 players and three difficulty levels – but also 33 flashpoints for 4 players, as well as short dungeons (called uprisings) and an open world, with countless locations and objects.
In PvP, SW:TOR offers particularly interesting battlegrounds, with some traps that you can use to send your opponents flying. There is also an arena mode for “3 vs. 3” matches and a ranked mode.
The theme park MMORPG offers content for every type of player and is also worthwhile in 2025 for players who otherwise have nothing to do with Star Wars. For example, there is a housing system and various professions that can be utilized to earn money.
Why is now a good time to get started? Star Wars: The Old Republic was sold to Broadsword Online Games in 2023. The new developer studio, which includes some of the old developers from the game, is bringing fresh air.
The biggest change that Broadsword has likely made so far involves the game’s graphics, which received a facelift in 2024. New lighting and shadow effects, prettier objects, and lastly many improved and new textures enhance the game.
The developers have also done much on the technical side of the game. For example, the game’s servers have migrated to the cloud. Those who have never tried SW:TOR find countless contents, but also players who haven’t been away for long will be pleased with story expansions and new PvE content.
In addition to the technical and graphical updates, there are now also the “Date Night” missions, with which you can elevate your interpersonal relationships to the next level. Moreover, more and more cosmetic items from Disney’s series and films can be found in the game.
Star Wars: The Old Republic looks better in 2024 than ever before and is continuously adding more content to the large theme park with each update. However, since the updates have been spread throughout the year, the improvements from the new developers likely went unnoticed by many.
