Star Wars: The Old Republic

How can you live out your evil side? In SWTOR you can create a character on the side of the Republic or the Empire. Especially as a member of the Empire, you experience a story where it’s about manipulating, torturing, or eliminating enemies. You can even prey on uninvolved civilians.
The MMORPG constantly gives you the choice of whether to really kill characters or let them escape. Depending on your decision, you gain good or bad “reputation.” The characters around you react accordingly, ostracizing you for your evil deeds.
If you are constantly evil, your appearance changes slightly. You can become a real scoundrel, and it will show.
However, these decisions are not only bound to the Empire. Even as a member of the Republic, you can spare certain individuals or take their lives within the story. In one quest, for example, a lady I actually trusted betrayed me. Now I can scold her for that, banish her from the region, or kill her.
A good Jedi would naturally settle for a reprimand. But in the end, the decision is up to you…
What else does the game offer? At launch, Star Wars: The Old Republic was regarded as a kind of “WoW in space.” This is mainly due to its almost identical structure with two factions, quests, and dungeons in PvE, instanced PvP, and the shared tab-targeting combat system.
However, SWTOR impresses with its good story, the unique companion system, and some special PvP modes like the Huttball or space battles.
Most recently, the game received the new expansion Legacy of the Sith, which brought some innovations, but ultimately disappointed in scope. Additionally, the studio was recently outsourced by Bioware to Broadsword, which also manages Dark Age of Camelot.
Is it still worth joining in 2023? The base game and many other contents of SWTOR are completely free to play. Because of the story and the voice acting, it’s actually always worth diving into the MMORPG – especially if you are fans of Star Wars.
However, it’s now difficult if you want to experience a game “hardcore”. New updates are currently coming out too slowly. Additionally, the combat system feels quite slow, which doesn’t necessarily fit the modern era.

DC Universe Online

How can you live out your evil side? In DC Universe Online, you take on the role of a superhero or supervillain. Alongside well-known characters like Batman, Superman, Joker, or Harley Quinn, you can then jump into battle and complete tons of quests and missions.
On the villain side, it’s much about sowing chaos and plunging the area into chaos. Even when you accidentally do something good, it’s only driven by the fact that you gain an advantage from it.
As a superhero, on the other hand, you try to avoid just this chaos. This is especially noticeable at the start of the game, where the differences are more strongly highlighted.
In the latest content, especially in instances, you often complete the same tasks, which revises the differences somewhat.
What else does the game offer? In DC Universe Online focuses on action-packed battles with powerful abilities. You explore a world full of well-known locations like Gotham City. Otherwise, you can expect the typical MMORPG content:
- Reaching the max level of 30 is relatively quick, but afterwards there is still a lot to do to improve your gear and become stronger
- In the endgame, there are dungeons, raids, missions for solo players or small groups
- For PvP fans, there is optional PvP in the open world where heroes can fight against villains or arena PvP. Plus, there’s a special mode where you can take on the role of iconic heroes and use their abilities
- There are regular updates in the form of new story content and adjustments to existing content
In July 2021, DC Universe was also reworked to allow Free2Play players to experience more. New chapters and daily login rewards were removed from the optional subscription and made accessible to all players. Additionally, the maximum money and housing system were expanded. This makes the superhero MMORPG even more interesting for newcomers.
Criticism is directed at the outdated graphics, the rather low difficulty at the beginning, and in the open game world, as well as the shop, which is up for debate.
Is it still worth joining in 2023? DC Universe is Free2Play and offers a world that many know from movies or comics. Especially the Joker is very well voiced in English and immediately captivates.
