What is Star Citizen? Star Citizen is the new project of “Wing Commander” veteran Chris Roberts, who aimed to create a new space simulation with Star Citizen. At the start of crowdfunding (2012), Star Citizen was considered a groundbreaking project because it was supposed to offer players complete freedom.
The game is a mix of space flight simulator, MMO, single player, trading simulation, space shooter, exploration game, and first-person shooter. It is divided into different modules focusing on each area.
What makes Star Citizen so special? Star Citizen is planned as a vast MMO world that players can explore freely. Players should be able to fly seamlessly from one planet to another while controlling their own ship. On the planets, they should be able to get out and walk around.
When they take off and land, it should all happen in real time. What they do then is their free choice.
Star Citizen has mainly been funded by players since the start of development, who donate or buy sometimes exorbitantly expensive ships that they appear within the game.
The doubts about Star Citizen: The internet often poses the question: “Will Star Citizen ever be released?” The accusation of “vaporware” arises repeatedly, meaning a product whose release keeps getting delayed. It is simply too ambitious, and one could never meet the expectations of players that have grown over the years.
Players also occasionally demand their money back because they don’t believe that Star Citizen will ever be finished and that it no longer fits what it was originally supposed to be. A fan with multiple sclerosis requested a refund for fear that he would not be able to play it physically at release.
Hardly any game polarizes like Star Citizen. These are certainly justified objections when considering the vast project being planned here. And the MMO part is still far from complete.
But … Star Citizen is doomed to have to be released! Given all the financial pressure and recent developments in the project, it seems hardly conceivable that this won’t happen. The budget is expected to rise to around 500 million dollars by the release, mind you. Over 200 million had already been spent by 2017, and just recently a music billionaire invested around 50 million dollars.
One thing is for sure: Most backers, including those who have already been able to play it, believe in the success of Star Citizen.
And what gives fans hope is that the single-player part was announced for 2020.
What do you think? Which game do you believe will never come out of development?
