In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, you can currently see which words are completely okay in English and which are strictly prohibited. To outsiders, it seems strange. The experienced former pro and content creator Doug “Censor” Martin insulted an opponent for minutes, only stopping at one word.
Who is the pro?
- Doug “Censor” Martin was once a big name in Call of Duty: in 2011 he won a championship title at Blackops. Today he is still active for Boston Academy, but mainly he is now a YouTuber and Twitch streamer.
- As a YouTuber, he repeatedly stood out with relatively extreme videos that revolved around how he could actually have the most beautiful women in the world, but prefers to play Call of Duty. Once he also announced to expose the alleged cheater Nadia.
- But now he has made a mistake for which he must apologize. He spoke to a player in a homophobic manner, but used the one homophobic word that you must not say in English.
Censor rants about a player accused of cheating
What did he do? In a live stream of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on October 16, Censor lost his composure. Live on Twitch, he lashed out severely at a player he has a problem with: The player Kodo was accused of cheating, and Censor had already clashed with him before.
Censor angrily berated Kodo: He told the player he was bad at the game, “sucks dicks,” and is a pussy. He behaved as if he knew “his shit,” but actually knows nothing.
Censor then asked who he follows, whether he is a “Brandon Dashy Dickrider.” Because that’s exactly what he sounds like. Dashy is a CoD player for Optic.
Censor could not control himself: He had no respect for the other, calling him a “bitch” and a “pussy” who should get lost. He told him to unfollow him on social media, “you little fucking fa**ot.”
But at that moment, Censor reached a limit for himself: At the word that starts with “fa”, he interrupted himself immediately, made an alarm sound, and babbled awkwardly. He admitted he was an idiot.
Censor apologizes for the word – He does not stand for it
Here’s how it went on: After the stream, he apologized in a 2-minute video for using the “fa” word. That’s not something he stands for, and he doesn’t actively use the word.
He knows that the word is wrong and is disappointed in himself. He was embarrassed at that moment.
Using the word is simply wrong, and he does not want others to use it just because he does.
The entire language sounds homophobic – but at one word, the limit is reached
This seems so strange from our perspective: The case shows how absurd the boundaries of political correctness can be and that the limits are not comprehensible to outsiders.
The entire speech by Censor is permeated with words that somehow sound homophobic:
- “Bitch” – is a derogatory term for women
- “Dickrider” – literally translated as “dick rider” is someone who wants to please a popular thing or person
- “Pussy” – is used here derogatorily as “softy”
- “Suck dick” – is also a homophobic allusion to oral sex for a man
These are basically all words that are somehow homophobic in nature. All these words play with the idea of how “a real man” should behave and that deviations from that are wrong.
All these words are completely okay for Censor and apparently also for his viewers. They can all be used like that. None of it is criticized.
But precisely the “fa” word is such a forbidden word that there the limit is immediately reached and the streamer has to apologize for it for minutes. The word is only referred to as the “fa” word.
For non-native speakers who grew up in a different culture, it is hard to comprehend why other words that sound much harsher to our ears are okay, but this one is not.
The Ukrainian s1mple had a very similar problem: He frequently used a Russian word that was completely okay for him, but represented a worthy insult in the ears of Twitch:
