In gaming, there are countless games, and when a title sells well, the hope for a sequel is high. However, many well-known titles have been waiting for years for a sequel. Here, we show you the most famous games without a continuation that fans are still waiting for.
What kind of games are these? In our list, you will find infamous games that everyone has heard of at least once. The genre is less important in this case. Rather, it’s about iconic titles that are loved by the community and for which a sequel has been expected for years.
In our list, we have agreed on 23 titles – not all of them have been waiting for their continuation for the same length of time. For this reason, we categorize the respective titles into four categories:
- Games with over 5 years of waiting time
- Games with over 10 years of waiting time
- Games with over 15 years of waiting time
- Games with over 20 years of waiting time
Additionally, we will explain in 2-3 sentences what kind of games these are and why fans have been waiting for years for a sequel. So let’s move on to the most recent titles:
Games with over 5 years of waiting time
The Division 3 (6 years)
The franchise surrounding The Division was almost buried by Ubisoft itself, but the fans and their loyalty convinced the studio to reconsider. The Division 2 eventually brought DLCs with significant delays, and it is known that Ubisoft is actively working on a third installment. However, nothing is currently known about the sequel, and fans have been waiting for it for 6 years.
Just Cause 5 (7 years)
Just Cause 4 had a rather mediocre start after its release. The game impressed with its graphics, the game world, and the soundtrack, but its story was disappointing. Normally, the shooter receives a sequel after just a few years (3-5 years), but now it has been 7 years. Rumors suggest that a fifth installment was canceled, but this has not been confirmed by the studio (Source: kitguru.net).
Hollow Knight Silksong (8 years)
Hollow Knight was released 8 years ago and enchanted a large part of the gaming scene as a Metroidvania. Its world, story, and tough bosses are just a few points on the long list of things that Team Cherry, the studio, has been able to implement perfectly. Many have been waiting for a sequel for ages, and with Silksong, there is even one. It is supposed to be released in 2025, but there is no exact start date yet.
Dark Souls 4 (9 years)
The last installment of Dark Souls was released in 2016 with a conclusion that many fans received with tears. A sequel? Not in the near future, according to the mastermind behind the trilogy, Hidetaka Miyazaki. For him, exploring new ideas is more important than returning to old success stories. He hasn’t closed the door on a Dark Souls 4, but new ideas would need to be behind it. So fans have been waiting for a sequel for 9 years (Source: reddit.com).
