New aliens in Star Wars are always a highlight. A recent series revolving around Darth Maul has now introduced a Jedi whose species has never been seen before.

What series is it about? Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is a new animated series airing on Disney+. So far, two episodes have been released, with eight more to follow. Two episodes are released weekly.
The series is set one year after Palpatine betrayed the Republic in Episode 3 and seized power.
Maul – Shadow Lord naturally introduces several new characters, including two survivors of Order 66. This purge by the Emperor nearly led to the complete eradication of the Jedi Order at the end of Episode 3. Only about 200 of them managed to escape, one thanks to a clever plan.
Of the two previously unknown survivors, a Jedi named Eeko-Dio Daki is particularly intriguing. His species has never been seen in Star Wars before.
A principle-driven Jedi
Who are the two Jedi? On one hand, the series features the Twi’lek Devon Izara, whose species is already known from many other characters like Aayla Secura. More interesting is the Jedi Eeko-Dio Daki, who initially resembles a dinosaur.
He is rather small at 150 centimeters, his skin and eyes are green, and he belongs to the species of Mosyk. This type makes its premiere in Maul – Shadow Lord. So far, it has not appeared in any other Star Wars story but is now entering the canon.
In the official making-of of the series on starwars.com, it is mentioned that Eeko-Dio Daki was even referred to as “Dino-Jedi” at first before he received his real name.
He and Devon Izara escaped before Order 66 and sought refuge on the planet Janix from the Emperor’s henchmen. The two characters differ in their views on how things should proceed from there.
While Devon Izara wants to fight for her survival and is willing to steal, the Dino-Jedi insists on sticking to his principles. He maintains that help will come if one just shows enough trust.
What does the new species mean for Star Wars? In the galaxy, there are countless alien species, and the Mosyk are a welcome addition. It will be exciting to see if the dinosaur-like beings will play a prominent role in other films and series in the future.
Similar things have happened in the past. For instance, the species of Devon Izara, the Twi’lek, was also a newcomer in Episode 6, appearing as a supporting character. Bib Fortuna was the first of his kind to be seen in Star Wars. Nowadays, there are numerous representatives of the species, and it is widely known.
