How much money has Larian actually made with Baldur’s Gate 3? This can now be roughly estimated, since the revenues are known.
When talking about successful video game developers of recent years, there is no way around Larian Studios. While many other developers have had to lay off many employees in recent times, Larian is doing excellently. How well the company is actually doing has now been revealed by an Irish site – because in Ireland, Larian has to pay its taxes.
What has been published? The Irish magazine “Irish Independent” reported that Larian made a profit of 249 million euros (before taxes) in 2023 – the year in which Baldur’s Gate 3 was released. The total revenue for 2023 amounts to even 427 million euros.
No one knows how successful Baldur’s Gate 3 really is
How successful was Baldur’s Gate 3? Larian itself has never published figures on how often Baldur’s Gate 3 was actually sold, but there are a number of statements and logical estimates. For example, “SteamSpy” estimated at the end of December 2023 that Baldur’s Gate 3 must have sold around 20 million copies on Steam alone. The Irish Independent estimates 15 million copies – and the publishing director of Baldur’s Gate 3 mentioned “well over 10 million players”.
How did it perform previously? The year before (2022), the numbers were entirely different. Larian only achieved revenues of 22.7 million euros – after deducting all expenses, the developer was even about 200,000 euros in the red, thus could not generate any profits for the year 2022.
Fortunately, things turned out differently and Baldur’s Gate 3 became a great success. One that Larian can draw on for several more years and now has enough resources to dedicate itself to at least 2 other projects simultaneously. Let’s hope that the upcoming titles will be just as convincing so that we can continue to enjoy Larian’s games for a long time.
