As many new games are released in early 2022, at least 2 MMORPGs must close their doors. The curious thing is this: one of them already shut down its servers in 2019. Now it must also stop the reboot and thus dies again.
What MMORPGs are those? Eternal Magic was a free-to-play MMORPG from the Chinese developer studio Duoyi. The game has, among other things, blatantly copied well-known titles like WoW and Guild Wars 2.
It shut down its servers on January 10, 2022, after the end was already announced in December 2021. The demise of Eternal Magic was even correctly predicted by MeinMMO oracle Alexander Leitsch at the beginning of last year correctly.
The second MMORPG is Kritika:Reboot. The developers have announced that the servers will close on February 16, 2022. Since January 12, players can no longer purchase anything in the cash shop.
Kritika was known, among other things, for its action and for very extravagant and sometimes questionable character design – like little girls with big guns. The exciting thing is that Kritika:Reboot was already the remake of Kritika Online.
Kritika Online already died once in 2019
This is what happened in 2019: The original version of the MMORPG, Kritika Online, closed its doors in April 2019 – at least in the West. The Korean version continued running, and players could even transfer their accounts.
The game, however, did not want to accept its death. About half a year later, in November 2019, a remake came about. Kritika:Reboot was supposed to revise some features and even received quite a good reception on Steam at release. We analyzed the game back then:
Now, however, the reboot must also close its doors. Exact reasons are not given. However, Kritika:Reboot has only attracted an average of 100 players on Steam since October of last year (via steamcharts.com). For a healthy MMORPG economy, that is not enough.
Which MMOs are still dying in 2022? Although January is not even halfway through, already 2 MMORPGs are either dead or on the verge of being shut down. In the coming 12 months, there will surely be several more closures.
Our MMORPG expert Alexander Leitsch has already gazed into his crystal ball and made his predictions. However, Kritika was not among the MMOs he predicted would die:
