The most chaotic effects of Wild Magic from the rulebook (2014 and 2024)
These effects are found in the Player’s Handbooks of 2014 and 2024. Of course, there are many more, but these 7 are particularly absurd and random. While there are effects that are more useful in combat, what is better than a little chaos and simply: vibes?
- A long beard of feathers grows on you, remaining until you sneeze. Then, the feathers explode from your face. (Player’s Handbook 2014)
- You cannot speak for one minute. Whenever you try, pink bubbles come out of your mouth. (Player’s Handbook 2014)
- For the next minute, you must shout when you speak. (Player’s Handbook 2014)
- For the next minute, you are surrounded by quiet, ethereal music. (Player’s Handbook 2014)
- You transform into a potted plant. As this, you are incapacitated and vulnerable to all damage types. If your hit points drop to 0, your pot breaks and you return to your original form. (Player’s Handbook 2024)
- A creature friendly to you appears in a random space up to 60 feet from you. The creature is controlled by the DM and disappears one minute later. Roll a d4 to determine the creature: On a roll of 1, a modron duodrone appears. On a roll of 2, a flumph appears. On a roll of 3, a modron monodrone appears. On a roll of 4, a unicorn appears. The creature’s stat block can be found in the Monster Manual. (Player’s Handbook 2024)
- Roll a d10. Your age changes by the rolled number. On an odd roll, you become younger (at least 1 year). On an even roll, you become older. (Player’s Handbook 2014)
Anecdote from MeinMMO editor Caro: Especially with the last effect, my character in Dungeons & Dragons has been completely turned upside down, as she was sent back to age 15 by the effect, resulting in all the terrible changes associated with aging: bad smell, emotional outbursts, hormonal fluctuations, and “teenage angst.”
She – and the entire group – were very happy when puberty was finally resolved through a ban spell.
