Patch 10.2.6 is currently exciting fans of World of Warcraft with the new game mode Plunderstorm, a Battle Royale. Many victories, however, are mainly due to 2 spells: Fire Whirl
and Vanishing Into Shadows
, both of which can be frustrating. MeinMMO reveals the best tactics against the two spells.
What kind of spells are they?
- In the new game mode Plunderstorm, everyone starts without special abilities. You have to find and upgrade spells first.
- The currently best offensive spell is, according to unanimous opinion from experts and players, Fire Whirl. The skill engulfs you in flames and makes you slightly faster while dealing damage to nearby enemies.
- The perfect complement to this is the utility spell “Vanishing Into Shadows,” which teleports you a good distance and also cloaks you for a few seconds.
What makes them so strong? Fire Whirl is currently the strongest spell in the game in terms of pure damage. Moreover, it has no special requirements. With other skills, you have to aim or they take a long time to activate.
With Fire Whirl, you can continue to move and are even slightly faster, which already provides an advantage. To deal with enemies, you just need to stay close to them.
“Vanishing Into Shadows” is the perfect complement for Fire Whirl. The spell sends you several meters forward, allowing you to use it both for escaping and for attacking.
Whenever you are fighting enemies at the end of a match that you simply cannot catch up with, “Vanishing Into Shadows” is most likely the reason. The WoW streamer sodapoppin summarizes the situation with a dry: “Running away is just too strong.”

and “Vanishing Into Shadows” counter – Here’s how
Fire Whirl and “Vanishing Into Shadows” are likely the reasons for most victories at the moment. However, there are a few ways you can counter the two skills.
Counters for Fire Whirl
- Fire Whirl is only strong when enemies are near you. The best counter is “Explosive Crow’s Feet.” The spell throws you back and leaves a slowing trap behind.
- Alternatively, “Vanishing Into Shadows” or “Seismic Leap” can help you, though most players will then follow up with their own skills.
- If you are a bit more experienced in Plunderstorm, you can try a counter with “Push Away” or “Snow Spiral.” However, this is tricky because you need to maintain the correct distance. The enemy becomes very vulnerable afterward.
Counters for “Vanishing Into Shadows”
- The best counter against the skill is the spell “Chains of the Hunter.” The ability prevents enemies from getting too far away from you and allows you to follow them directly.
- Alternatively, the spell “Windstorm” works, but you have to aim it. This only helps if you know exactly where the enemy is located.
- A strong counter is also the rarely used offensive ability “Toxic Quilled Spike.” The spell leaves a damage-over-time effect (“DoT”) and can take out enemies wanting to flee with low HP.
Plunderstorm is still quite new, which is why the “meta” has yet to really form. At the moment, Fire Whirl is the best spell because it is the easiest to play and deals enormous damage. However, that could change in a few days. For example, sodapoppin relies on the Quilled Spike and Searing Axe and has had great success with that.
For the Battle Royale, experience and knowing when to use which spell and when opponents have cooldowns help a lot – just like in “real” PvP in WoW. That comes with time.
