Electronic Arts has officially announced the new space game Star Wars: Squadrons. And in the campaign, you can play both factions. Starting in October, you can dive into 5v5 PvP space battles.
Just over the weekend, there had been first details about the new Star Wars game from EA. Now Electronic Arts has officially announced the game.
What is Star Wars: Squadrons? The game offers you space battles in first-person perspective, set in the final days of the Galactic Empire. Specifically, the battles take place after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. In addition to 5v5 multiplayer battles, the game is also supposed to offer you an exciting story.
In the action-packed battles, the goal is to destroy the enemy flagship. Two features are sure to please you.
With Star Wars: Squadrons, you also play on the side of the Empire
Is this something special? In many Star Wars games, you only had the option to play as the Rebels. Battlefront 2 offered a campaign where you could play on the side of the Empire. This provided a very unique perspective and was well received by many players.
What does Star Wars: Squadrons offer? In the story of Star Wars: Squadrons, you play in alternating perspectives: on the side of the New Republic as the Vanguard Squadron and on the side of the Galactic Empire as the Titan Squadron. EA promises that you will encounter both new faces and familiar names. EA has not revealed more about the game’s story so far.
The cool thing is that you can create a freely customizable character for both factions. In Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Iden Versio was a predefined protagonist.
That’s why you’ll like this feature: Many players wish to play on the side of the Empire as well, since one often plays on the side of the Rebel Alliance. In Squadrons, the wish of some players could be fulfilled, to plunge into enemy X-Wings with a TIE Fighter.

In Star Wars: Squadron, you can customize your own spaceship
Is this something special? Already in Star Wars: The Old Republic, there was the possibility to improve your space fighter with components like engines and weapons or change its appearance with paint jobs. This was fun, but Galactic Starfighter never played a central role.
What does Star Wars: Squadrons offer? In the new game from EA, that could now be different. You fight against other players and rise through the ranks. In addition, you collect components with which you can improve your spaceships. In total, you can collect parts for four areas:
- Weapons
- Hull
- Engines
- and Shields
Additionally, you can customize your cockpit, the exterior of your ships, and the pilot with cosmetic items. How upgrading the spaceships and collecting the components works has not yet been explained in detail by Electronic Arts.
That’s why you’ll like this feature: In games like Star Wars: Battlefront 2 or The Old Republic, space battles were more of an embellishment or a nice addition. Star Wars: Squadrons, however, is supposed to provide you with a full experience with space battles and not just decoration. For instance, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 had nice space battles, which were fun but not particularly deep.
Here, Star Wars: Squadrons could indeed provide a new gaming experience. However, the first gameplay will only be available on June 19 during EA Play Live. Then we will know more.
