Netflix is greatly expanding its anime program. This year, 18 new anime films and series are set to be added to the lineup. Among them are series that were previously only available on other platforms like Crunchyroll. Furthermore, Netflix has secured an Oscar winner that every anime fan should know.
Which film is it? Netflix has secured the rights to The Boy and the Heron. The anime film is from Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. The studio is known for films such as “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Howl’s Moving Castle.”
The film just premiered in theaters a few weeks ago and is a must-see for our MeinMMO editor Christoph Waldboth and for every anime fan. Not just Christoph thinks that this is an exceptionally good film.
The Boy and the Heron was able to secure an Oscar at the 2024 Golden Globes as the first anime film ever. Therefore, you should keep an eye on when the film launches on Netflix. So far, no exact date has been set yet.

Which anime are coming next? That’s not all: Netflix has secured an additional 17 films and series that will be available on the streaming service throughout 2024. It all starts today with two films from My Hero Academia and a series that was previously only available on Crunchyroll: Spy X Family.

- June 14: Ultraman: Rising
- June 22: Rising Impact (Season 1)
- Fall: Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance
- Coming soon: BEASTARS: Final Season
- Coming soon: The Boy and the Heron
- Coming soon: My Hero Academia (Seasons 1-4)

It is possible that this is not the end. In Japan, films like One Piece Film Red, Jujutsu Kaisen (Season 1), and Black Clover (Seasons 1-4) are expected (via Twitter). A confirmation for Germany is still pending.
Netflix has already added several new anime to its program in recent months. These include, for example, the sci-fi secret tip Pluto and the latest episodes of One Piece. In addition, there are other well-known anime series like Naruto or Ghibli films such as Spirited Away that have been available for a while.
