A gamer says he wants to reward his son for his good performance with a new gaming PC. But the son immediately wants hardware for 3,000 euros. The community is amused and entertained but has some important tips for the father.
A father promised his son a new gaming PC for his good performance in school. And the 16-year-old makes high demands right away. But the father is puzzled about whether he really has to spend that much.
He knows nothing about PC gaming, and the numbers mean nothing to him. He isn’t even sure what his son is actually playing (via reddit.com):
I promised my son (he is 16 years old) that I would get him a new computer if he did well in school. Well, he did more than well, and I want to reward him for his efforts, but 3000 euros seems a bit high to me. He has spent the last month looking for parts and reading reviews.
He claims that this PC is the best and will last more than 4 years. With it, he can play all games, while with his current one he can only play a few. Is the 4 years really true, or will he be asking for a new one next year?
A high-end gaming PC for Fortnite
What exactly does the 16-year-old want? The son is demanding high-end hardware and not just a little. The father details what he wishes for and what his son has picked out in recent weeks:
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 7800x3D
- Graphics card: Gigabyte RTX 4090
- RAM: 32 GB DDR5 6000 Mhz
- Storage: 2 TB M2.SSD
- Power supply: 1000 Watt, Corsair RM1000x Shift
With the Ryzen 7800x3D, he has chosen the best AMD processor for gaming at the moment, with the RTX 4090 the fastest graphics card from Nvidia.
All the hardware combined costs around 3,000 euros. The family man explains this in his post.
How does the father react? He initially doesn’t trust the whole thing because 3,000 euros is a lot of money.
Rightfully, the clueless father asks: Does he really need all this? Or is it just a waste of money to spend 3,000 euros on hardware when the boy just builds structures, shoots opponents, and pushes balls around with cars?
Well, to be honest, I don’t think he actually plays much. The building and shooting is what I see him playing most often. I think I’ve also seen him play a game with cars and a ball.
While he is willing to spend that much money, he wants to at least know if it would ultimately be a complete waste of money and if he could spend less.
And many on Reddit explain to him that his son is asking far too much from him. Because he wouldn’t need such high-end hardware at all.
The father should urgently talk to his son again
What are the reactions? Many are amused and partly shocked. Because for the games the 16-year-old wants to play, he definitely does not need a high-end PC. Many are shocked that one must give such expensive hardware to a teenager.
And most users immediately offer him a few reasonable tips:
- Instead of an RTX 4090, he should rather buy his son an RX 6800 XT or a RX 7800 XT which has just been released. This would save him 1,000 euros.
- The Ryzen 7800x3D is also completely exaggerated. A weaker processor would suffice.
- 4K is also not necessary. Currently, the most popular resolution is QWHD (1440p). For that, he wouldn’t need an RTX 4090 either.
- The problem is also that the 16-year-old plays “only” on an older Full HD display. For an RTX 4090, he would need a significantly better display with WQHD or 4K, to make it even worthwhile. A weaker graphics card would be a much more sensible choice there.
- Some additionally criticize that 32 GB of RAM is also too much. 16 GB would be completely sufficient for his games.
- A gaming PC for 1,500 euros would more than meet his needs. Moreover, he could still upgrade a gaming PC later if the graphics card is not sufficient.
In most cases, however, it applies: An upgrade is still possible. A graphics card can be exchanged just like a processor, as long as the motherboard fits. RAM or an SSD can also be added later.
But it can get even more expensive. A company has now introduced a gaming PC with RTX 4090 that costs a whopping 30,000 euros. The 16-year-old is still far from that (yet). What makes this gaming PC so special, you can read directly on MeinMMO:
