At the Duo World Championship of Fortnite , only 2 out of 100 players competed with a controller. However, one of them, together with his partner, became second and thus a millionaire overnight. The 15-year-old had previously had a disagreement with his mother: his school grades suffered due to his enthusiasm for Fortnite.
Who became a millionaire? In 2nd place was the first 15-year-old Jaden “Wolfiez” Asham from Essex in the UK with his partner Rojo, a Dutch player.
Wolfiez is himself amazed that he won, as BBC reports. The duo was such an underdog that bookmakers didn’t even list their chances.
The two have together won 2.25 million US dollars – making the 15-year-old an overnight dollar millionaire.
Only 2 out of 100 played with controllers
This is the special aspect: As reported by the US site Polygon , Wolfiez was one of only two players to use a controller to compete in the Duo World Championship in Fortnite.
Almost all other players used Logitech mice, provided by Epic.
However, Epic also allowed players to compete with a standard “Xbox One” controller or with a Scuf Vantage controller, which is a PS4 device.
This is what Epic says: Epic says that the controller players played with the same settings as in the live game. Aim assist was also active.
Why is this so special? Normally, eSports is played exclusively with mouse and keyboard. These are considered superior due to their precision. That a controller player places so high is a rare occurrence.
Fortnite has many fans on PS4 and Xbox One: They naturally welcome controller players and see Wolfiez and Ayden, the other controller player, as an inspiration to follow in their footsteps.
A well-known Twitch streamer who uses a controller is Nickmercs – also the German player Kamo breaks PC records with a controller.
However, there is often criticism from PC players that controller players have an unfair advantage in Fortnite due to Aim Assist – which controller players deny.
Mother threw out Xbox One
What is Wolfiez’s background? The BBC spoke with the mother of the controller champ.
She says that she and her son clashed over Fortnite because his school grades worsened.
Once, she even threw out his Xbox after an argument – but now she accepts her son’s decision to become an eSports professional.
