An 11-year-old boy from North Carolina defended himself against a burglar who wanted to steal the television and the PlayStation console. The boy scared the burglar away with a machete.
As ABC reports, an 11-year-old boy in Melbane, North Carolina, was home alone when three men broke into his family’s house.
One of the burglars (19) found a BB gun in the house. He threatened the 11-year-old boy with the gun, took away his phone so he couldn’t call for help, and sent him to a bedroom closet. He told him to stay there.
The burglar set out to steal things, including a television and a PlayStation. Which PlayStation it was exactly is not known.
“If they come through the door, you show them”
The boy came out of his hiding place. He was not afraid of the BB gun: he knew it was not loaded. Moreover, his father had told him, “If they come through the door, you show them.”
The boy grabbed a machete that was hanging on the wall and confronted the burglar. The boy struck the burglar on the back of the head with the machete. The burglar then kicked the boy in the stomach, pushing him against the couch, but the 11-year-old jumped up and went after the burglar again. This time he swung the machete but missed.
The burglar kicked the boy on the side of the head and grabbed the television and PlayStation. But he then realized he was bleeding heavily from the boy’s first machete strike. He and his two accomplices fled.
Here’s how it ended: The injured burglar was filmed by a surveillance camera as he left a university hospital where he was treated. He was still wearing the hospital gown, had heavy bandages on his head, and had discharged himself against medical advice.
The police arrested him 40 hours later.
The 11-year-old is described as a “very tough kid” by the sheriff, who said he remained calm in such a situation. He is also the star baseball player of his team.
But the sheriff warns: One must consider that the incident could have had a tragic ending for the boy, his family, and the community.
