The Steam Spring Sale is currently in full swing. Here you can snag many game gems at a low price. Among them is the seemingly inconspicuous Brotato, which has sparked the love for a whole genre in MeinMMO author Linda Baumgartl.
When I first caught a glimpse of Brotato somewhere in my timeline, I honestly wasn’t very convinced. I get to play a potato running around with 6 weapons? And I can’t even attack myself? That sounded a bit too silly to me.
However, at that time, the game was on everyone’s lips, not least because YouTuber HandOfBlood had taken a great liking to the potato adventure. Also, my friend circle was buzzing with praise for the game.
So, during a Steam sale, I quickly added Brotato to my cart to see for myself, and I haven’t regretted it for a second.
The Game Principle: As Simple as It Is Genius
In Brotato, you play a battle-hungry potato fighting through large hordes of alien enemies. In each run, you must survive 20 waves of enemies to win the game.
To achieve that, after each enemy wave, you can buy weapons and other useful items in a shop. Additionally, you gain experience with which you can further improve your character.
What are the battles like? In combat itself, you mainly have to do one thing: run. Because your weapons, of which you can carry a total of 6, attack automatically. So you dodge enemies, collect materials (the currency), crates with items, or healing items, and try not to die in the process.

What do I like? The following aspects among others have ensured that Brotato was able to capture my heart after initial skepticism.
- Easy to learn, hard to master: The basic aspects are quickly understood, and you can start slashing right away. However, if you want, you can also dive deep into the swamp of optimal builds and strategies.
- Luck factor: You don’t always get the items you need at the moment. This draws you into the classic spiral: “Just one more attempt. Next time I will definitely have better luck.”
- Good for a quick round: Rounds usually last about 30 minutes. Additionally, the game saves after each enemy wave.
An Incredible Variety of Characters
For me, the greatest strength of Brotato is the many different characters. Currently, there are 44 of them. Before each game, you choose one of these characters, which significantly determines the direction your build will take this time. Each character has its own strengths and weaknesses, thus promoting a different play style.
Due to this variety, even after nearly 100 hours I have spent with the game, I am still motivated to try out and perfect new builds.
Moreover, many characters and items also have to be unlocked first. This adds additional motivation.
What characters are there? Of course, there are classic classes, such as a pistol expert, a magician, or a brawler. Some more specialized characters are, for example:
- Chunky: Damage scales with maximum health, but is very slow and has poor defense.
- Pacifist: Receives materials for each living enemy at the end of a wave, deals little damage.
- Weapon Dealer: Weapons cost 95% less, but all purchased weapons are destroyed after each wave.
Conclusion? Don’t be deceived by the visuals, Brotato is a really great game. After my first hours of gameplay, I was so excited that I developed a full-blown obsession for the genre.
No matter whether you want to call them shooter-roguelike, reverse bullet hell, or vampire-survivors-like. Anyone who enjoys fighting hordes of enemies and tinkering with character builds should definitely check this out.
In the Steam Spring Sale, you can currently get Brotato for 25% off at €3.74. Which game you can also snag for a low price is revealed here: One of the two best games of all time is currently only €1 on Steam.
