6. Opportunity creates API thieves
In Season 14, data miners became a serious problem for Bungie. Some allegedly sold codes for items that were not yet officially in the game. Those who knew where to look already knew the entire story long before its release, and new event items were also leaked.
Of course, one wants to get the latest information about the future of Destiny 2 quickly and is always eager to learn something cool first. But you can understand Bungie wanting to reveal a story twist only at the end of the season or planning a hidden exotic as a surprise.
But the data miners countered in Destiny 2: the “secret data” is often hardly encrypted. Most info can be retrieved by any Guardian in a second from public API databases – without hacking skills at all. Bungie should encrypt such database entries. In such cases, the exact information on exotics, triumphs, and other items cannot simply be read publicly.
7. Major patches gladly also in the middle of the season
Normally, Bungie radically overhauls the sandbox at the start of a season. Lengthy patch notes show what has changed and what Guardians will have to deal with over the next three months. Usually, it remains like this with only some bug fixes and minor updates until the next season.
However, the Splicer season brought an extensive mid-season update. The patch not only brought new content but fundamentally changed weapons. Old exotics became boss killers, and the PvP meta was turned upside down.
Even though we Guardians complain about updates, such balance adjustments and relatively quick responses to problems should become standard in the future. The best thing about new updates in Destiny 2 is now the ridiculous comments.
8. The seasonal artifact is boring except for a few mods
Since 2019, Destiny has received a new seasonal artifact every season. However, “new” is a considerable exaggeration here. The system has been virtually unchanged for two years now.
- Every three months, we level up an item that grants us mods and perks.
- Half of these mods are useless.
- Some mods are so absurdly strong that everyone uses / has to use them: Strong for endgame – New artifact mod makes you boss killers
- Other mods are simply necessary and dictate which weapons are the PvE meta. Guardians probably know this question: Which weapon do I use to break the shields of champions in the new season?
- Resetting the artifact and experimenting is outrageously expensive.
- Leveling the artifact is an eternal grind and a requirement for some endgame activities. You need that extra power level to even participate in top ranks.
Here, please be bolder with variety. Because the few cool mods are always highlights and are painfully missed in the next season. Bungie can surely extract much more from the artifact.
9. Stasis weapons don’t work at all
Stasis as an element has dominated Destiny 2 for half a year. The nasty ice abilities caused hatred in PvP but fun in PvE. How can it be that the two only Stasis weapons are so exceptionally weak?
- Griff der Erlösung is probably the most useless exotic in the whole game. Apart from unlocking the Stasis aspects, you never need that thing.
- The exotic Stasis pistol Kryosthesie 77K caused fear before its appearance, yet in practice, it was underwhelming.
Considering that Bungie will soon also want to give legendary guns Stasis and distribute the element to more enemies, a good balance still needs to be found here.
10. Iron Banner is so important for every season
The Iron Banner event takes up a lot of space on the roadmaps every season. However, the monthly PvP event has long ceased to be a highlight.
The armors are warmed-up reskins. The last new set was more than two years ago. The knight armors are among the coolest things you can wear. If they must be reused, why not use the hot ornaments from Rise of Iron from Destiny 1.
There’s also plenty of room for improvement with the weapons. Season 14 actually brought two fresh guns, and look, the Guardians and our MeinMMO author Philipp Hansen spent thousands of tokens for that.
If the PvP event is always so prominently featured on the roadmap of a new season, it should also be worth it. Otherwise, it unfortunately feels like a cheap fill-in. It would be great to have a new Crucible map for each Iron Banner – it’s already almost unbelievable that the newest PvP map is already over 500 days old.
What do you think Bungie did well in Season 14, and what still needs significant improvement for the new Season? Are you excited about the next chapter of Destiny 2, which is set to be revealed on August 24 along with information about the new expansion “Witch Queen”? Let us know in the comments.
