National ban of an MMORPG after 9 years
Authorities usually react quickly when they want to ban a game for their country. However, in the case of EverQuest, it took nine years for the Brazilian authorities to decide to ban the MMORPG nationwide. This was in January 2008. EverQuest was released in March 1999.
And what was the reason? According to guinnessworldrecords.com, Judge Carlos Alberto Simões apparently did not find it funny at all that one could play “evil” or “good” fantasy beings. In his opinion, the MMORPG promotes “the undermining of public order” and is therefore “an attack on the democratic state and the law as well as on public safety”.
The largest hack of MMO data
Do you remember the hacker attack on Sony in April 2011? The company had to announce afterward that the data of 24.6 million accounts from the MMO sector of Sony Online Entertainment had been stolen.
Players from EverQuest, EverQuest 2, Free Realms, Vanguard, Clone Wars Adventures, and DC Universe Online were affected. As a measure against the hack, all affected games had to be taken offline for almost two weeks (via guinnessworldrecords.com).
The longest-running MMORPG
While in the West, a game called Meridian 59 ushered in the era of the first 3D MMORPGs, Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds had already been online in Korea for a few months (since April 1996). You can still play both classics today.
Due to the slightly earlier release, only Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds can call itself the longest-running MMORPG (via guinnessworldrecords.com). Is there actually someone who has been playing the online role-playing game for 28 years and 7 months?
