The winner of pure numbers
When it comes to the MMORPG that can shine with the biggest numbers, RuneScape from Jagex comes to mind. Since January 2001, it has been online and continues to bring in good revenues for the company. Here is a selection of achievements:
- By July 2017, the MMORPG is said to have received a total of 1,014 updates (via guinnessworldrecords.com).
- More than 300 million interested parties have created an account for RuneScape, and the MMORPG is said to have made over one billion US dollars in revenue so far.
- By July 27, 2012, more than 443 billion minutes of playtime had reportedly accumulated. This made for an average playtime of about 37 hours per registered account at the time (via guinnessworldrecords.com). We unfortunately no longer know how high the number is now.
- By July 2017, RuneScape is said to have received 1,198 different pieces of music (via guinnessworldrecords.com).
There is also a Classic version of RuneScape:
The longest marathon for playing an MMORPG
We have a record for you that is almost still warm from the oven. In May 2024, a certain Justin O’Donnell from New Brunswick, New Jersey played a game called World of Warcraft for 78 hours and 30 minutes. Continuously. Without a break. In the meantime, viewers could donate on Twitch for a charitable cause (via guinnessworldrecords.com).
That things are crazier with streamers is shown by this story: Twitch streamer has been live for 62 days – Crazy Fortnite challenge keeps him streaming.
The first pizza delivery service in an MMORPG
In February 2005, not only did World of Warcraft launch in Europe, but the big competitor EverQuest II also secured a remarkable record. It was the very first game ever to feature an in-game pizza ordering service provided by the developers.
Anyone typing /pizza in the chat would instantly land on the order page of Pizza Hut and could have their lunch or dinner delivered (via guinnessworldrecords.com).
