In some games, you encounter very special duos whose stories never let you go. As part of the campaign Find Your Next Game: Love Edition, MeinMMO presents 10 dreamlike love couples from video games.
Whether in story games, MMORPGs, or classics – you can find love in every genre. We would like to introduce you to 10 relationships in more detail, including heterosexual and homosexual couples as well as close friendships.
Guild Wars 2: Kasmeer and Marjory
Within the main story of Guild Wars 2, Kasmeer and Marjory accompany the players through the “Living World” for some time.
Kasmeer comes from a noble family that lost its fortune, which is why she is looking for a job. She finds one at the detective agency of Marjory Delaqua, a necromancer with Canthan roots.
The two fall in love and experience numerous adventures together within the story. At the end of the expansion End of Dragons, there is finally a marriage proposal. The scene was not easy to write, according to the developers.
Final Fantasy X: Tidus and Yuna
Tidus, a professional blitzball player, suddenly finds himself in another world in Final Fantasy X. There, he meets the mage Yuna, whom he subsequently accompanies. Tidus’s bravest moments are those in which he wants to protect Yuna – for instance, when she is kidnapped by the Al Bhed.
During their journey, the two become closer, resulting in a moving love story. Final Fantasy X brings players closer to the personal development of both and their feelings for each other.
Particularly the touching scene in the Macalania river remains memorable. It is night, and the reflection of the starry sky sparkles in the water. Suddenly, Yuna begins to cry, whereupon Tidus wraps his arms around her and gently kisses her.
Life is Strange: Chloe and Max
In the first part of Life is Strange, Max returns to her hometown, where she meets her best friend Chloe. The two had not seen each other for 5 years.
While Max is rather reserved and perceives the world through her camera, Chloe has become rebellious over the 5 years: she smokes, drinks, has blue hair, and has problems with her stepfather.
Despite their differences, their friendship grows closer with each chapter. At one point, Chloe challenges Max to kiss her, a choice players can accept or decline. If Max does not kiss Chloe, her journal later states that she regrets it.
Overall, there are numerous hints within Life is Strange pointing to a romantic love between Chloe and Max. Whether it’s a friendship or a romantic relationship remains open. “It depends on how you let Max act regarding Chloe,” writes co-director Michel Koch on Twitter.
In 2018, Hannah Telle, the voice actress of Max, was asked about the relationship between Chloe and Max. “Their relationship is bigger than that. Bigger than love. Bigger than romance,” she replied (via YouTube).
Borderlands 3: Wainwright and Hammerlock
Borderlands 3 has an entire DLC focused on an intimate love relationship. It is called “Guns, Love and Tentacles” and deals with the wedding of Sir Alistar Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs.
Previously, the credits of Borderlands 3 show how Wainwright proposes to Hammerlock. He refers to Hammerlock as “his partner” and “the love of his life” (via Borderlands Wiki).
The two marry on the distant, frozen planet Xylourgos. They invite all Vault Hunters to their wedding, including Gaige and Claptrap.
Before the wedding, there is a little problem: the planet is inhabited by a cult that worships gigantic dead monsters. Thus, the leader of the cult has her eyes on one of the grooms. Players must save the wedding before it can take place.
Haven: Yu and Kay
In the cooperative RPG Haven, Yu and Kay flee together to a foreign planet because their relationship is not accepted in their hometown. To stay together, they must leave their planet.
Yu and Kay, who were already a couple before the story begins, now experience everyday life together and face the challenges of a new planet. They explore the area, master battles, and craft items – however, the focus of the game is on the dialogues between them. “Beautifully written, a great love story,” players write on Steam.
At the beginning of Haven, you can choose how you play Yu and Kay: as a man and woman, two men, or two women.
The Darkness: Jenny and Jackie
The Darkness is a dark shooter – but love can also be found here. You take on the role of Jackie Estacado, who suddenly gains a supernatural power on his 21st birthday.
Jackie experiences action-packed shootouts in New York City, but in between, there are scenes where he visits his girlfriend Jenny Romano at home. The two maintain a loving relationship. In the picture, they cuddle with each other, Jenny lays her head on Jackie’s chest and says: “I can feel your heartbeat.”
However, Jackie gets involved with a criminal organization that wanted to kill him. He thwarts their plans, but in retaliation, they kill Jenny. Thus, their love ends tragically.
In the second part of The Darkness, the focus shifts to Jackie wanting to avenge the death of his beloved Jenny and becoming a monster himself.
Mario and Peach
Since Super Mario Bros. in 1985, nearly every Mario game is about him saving his beloved Princess Peach. Peach is a loving, kind figure, who, however, does not learn from her mistakes, which is why she is repeatedly kidnapped by Bowser. For her, Mario regularly risks his life.
When the two are not together, they worry about each other, and conflicts only arise rarely. For example, at the end of Mario Odyssey, Peach becomes angry that Mario and Bowser are fighting over her. But in the end, she forgives Mario (via Mario Wiki).
With the game Super Princess Peach, Nintendo turns the story around: Here, Bowser kidnaps Mario, and Peach has to rescue him. When she returns to her castle after a walk and sees what has happened, she immediately wants to rush to help him. Using the umbrella Perry, which she uses for her attacks, she can save Mario.
The two have done almost everything together – Peach is indispensable in Mario games, and vice versa. A Mario movie is also coming soon, where Peach certainly cannot be missed. After all, the two have been together for 38 years.
World of Warcraft: Ilanya and Driana
In 2016, a homosexual couple was introduced to World of Warcraft with a side quest. Since WoW: Legion, there is the quest series “Cursed, but Useful” that sends you to Azsune to learn enchantments from the spirits of the night elves.
Enchantress Ilanya sends you to search for her former love, who has been dead for 10,000 years: Priestess Driana. She had committed a betrayal, was killed, and has wandered as a ghost ever since. It’s up to you to purify her so she can return to Ilanya: “There is a place where Enchantress Ilanya and I spent many happy hours. The love that pervades such a place is stronger than devil magic.”
After Driana never thought she would see the love of her life again, the two are brought back together.
Destiny 2: Saint-14 and Osiris
There is also a love couple in Destiny 2. The two legendary guardians, Saint-14 and Osiris, are in love, as Bungie confirmed in 2020.
Osiris is the mentor of Ikora Rey and the former Vanguard commander who was exiled. The Titan Saint-14 served as the first Titan Vanguard leader. Through them, you experience a captivating backstory in which Osiris must save the Titan.
Since the story of Season 12, it has been relatively clear to players that the Warlock Osiris and Saint-14 have romantic feelings for each other. Osiris found notes from Saint, in which he talks about “his fiery phoenix.”
After the community discussed the supposed love couple, narrative designer Robert Brookes spoke on Twitter. He writes: “Yes, Saint and Osiris are gay. They always have been.”
When Osiris was in a very bad state in Season 18 and lying in a coma, it was again the 14th who lovingly took care of him and never gave up on him. In the end, everything turns out well. Thanks to a special cup of tea, two beloved characters experienced the sweet and tender reunion they deserved.
Osiris recovers and returns stronger in Season 19. It was an emotional and hard-fought reunion in Destiny 2. Especially considering all they have been through together.
Final Fantasy XIV: Nanamo and Raubahn
After the Garlean conquer Raubahn’s homeland, he flees to Ul’Dah, where he ultimately becomes the Phoenix general and companion of the Sultana Nanamo Ul Namo.
He remains loyal to her, and a deep bond between the two can be recognized. The scenes between them suggest that Nanamo cares for Raubahn very much. Later in the game, it becomes clear that Raubahn’s feelings are more paternal in nature – he loves Nanamo like a daughter.
When someone attempts to assassinate Nanamo during a festival and she seemingly lies dead on the ground, Raubahn loses his composure. He is shaken by her apparent death and kills Teledji, who insulted the Sultana. Shortly thereafter, someone cuts off his left arm.
Later, when it becomes clear that Nanamo is merely in a comatose state and not dead, Raubahn receives the antidote. He can thus resurrect Nanamo.
