On September 28, 2021, New World was released and attracted nearly a million players simultaneously at launch almost exactly a year ago. However, the game then fell rapidly. Now, so many fans have returned that we haven’t seen since February. But what is the reason for this? We at MeinMMO summarize.
What happened to New World? At the release of the MMORPG from Amazon, the game received surprisingly good feedback. Almost a million players gathered simultaneously at the start of the new world on Steam.
However, frustration spread quickly. Some didn’t like the gameplay, while others left the game due to numerous bugs.
The player numbers of New World shrank quickly, reaching their lowest point in June 2022. Only 22,565 players were playing simultaneously on the best day of the month. That is only about 2.5% of the player counts from launch.
What is happening now in New World? Since August, however, the numbers of active fans have been rising again. Initially, it was only a small increase, but in September New World achieved a player peak of 45,745 simultaneous players, nearly doubling the numbers from June.
So many people haven’t played New World since February. And this, even though there hasn’t been a major update recently. So why the significant increase in players in the MMORPG?

Twitch Streamers Are Coming Back
What does New World look like on Twitch? A closer look shows that Twitch numbers are also rising again. This is due to large and well-known streamers returning to the MMORPG. MMORPG giant Asmongold, among others, has stated that New World is slowly finding its place and knows what it wants to be.
Even the huge streamer Summit1g was drawn into a stream of New World. This is particularly noteworthy because he was one of the few major Twitch streamers who wasn’t part of the New World hype during the launch.
The well-known MMORPG YouTuber TheLazyPeon also recently released a video in which he re-evaluates New World in 2022 and finds many positive words (via YouTube).
Since the player numbers were already very high initially, this already shows that there is a significant interest in the game. New World has improved in many areas over the past year. Streams could not only attract brand new players but also entice some old fans to return.
The Mood on Reddit is Changing: Reddit is also a source for many gamers when it comes to their favorite games. The mood in the reddit for New World is becoming increasingly positive towards the game.
At launch, things looked different; the general sentiment was rather negative and influenced by the many bugs and game errors at the release. However, currently, more and more threads are appearing where people are returning to New World and having a lot of fun.

A Huge Update is Coming
Brimstone Sands is Coming Soon: In addition to the media influence, there is simply more content on the way. The last major update already brought a new expedition and great features that fans have long wished for.
The next major patch, Brimstone Sands, is already on the horizon. It is expected to be the largest update for the MMORPG so far and will bring more story and a completely new zone reminiscent of Egypt, along with a new weapon.
The weapon is a greatsword. Fans have long wished for it, and it will soon find its way into the MMORPG. When exactly the update will arrive is currently still uncertain. However, you can already play on the test server.

A Lot Has Improved: Overall, New World has used the past year to work on itself. The MMORPG has been improved in many areas and is slowly but surely managing to win back lost players.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why New World has gained a significant surge of active fans right now. Nevertheless, it seems that the increase is continuing. Especially if Brimstone Sands actually goes live, there could be another sharp rise.
