There is over an hour of gameplay for Squadron 42, which is the single-player campaign of Star Citizen. It evokes memories of Wing Commander. Additionally, Alpha 3.0 is now live in the MMO part of Star Citizen.
Fans of Star Citizen have been waiting a long time for this gameplay footage. Originally, Squadron 42 was supposed to take center stage in the winter stream of 2016, but that was postponed. But now, it has finally arrived. Just in time for the end of 2017, CIG revealed an hour of pre-alpha gameplay for Squadron 42.
1 Hour Gameplay Demo Shows Mix of Adventure, Space Simulation, and Shooter
This is a “Vertical Slice”, a segment that is supposed to be representative of the whole: There are quieter dialogue scenes in the exposition like from an adventure or RPG, flight maneuvers with simulation characteristics in the cockpit of a spaceship, and action like from a first-person shooter.
Hollywood Stars in the Single-Player Campaign of Star Citizen
This Squadron 42 is the standalone single-player campaign of Star Citizen. Hollywood stars like Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, John Rhys-Davies, Andy Serkis, Gillian Anderson, or Mark Strong play new roles here. If the guy from the title image looks familiar but you can’t quite place him, that’s the Irish actor Liam Cunningham; he plays Davos in Game of Thrones.
First comments on the gameplay are quite impressed by what they see. The acting performance and production values are praised. Others note appreciatively that everything looks so alive and the world seems constantly in motion.

In any case, there is a lot of material in the gameplay footage for the loyal backers, who will surely analyze the gameplay meticulously over Christmas.
This single-player campaign is important to many backers of Star Citizen – it is supposed to stand in the tradition of Wing Commander, a legendary series of games from the 90s, from which Star-Citizen mastermind Chris Roberts earned his reputation as a visionary.
The gameplay lasts about 67 minutes. It is available in two versions, one with just the gameplay and the other version with a developer commentary from Chief Chris Roberts, Content Director Sean Tracy, and Lead Writer Dave Haddock.
