You now get the free game at Epic: A gaming gem with 92% positive reviews on Steam

Every week there is a free game in the Epic Games Store that users can claim for free. This time it’s a real treasure for retro fans: Cave Story+.

When is the free game available? The free game is available for one week in the Epic Games Store. The current title, Cave Story+., is available until September 7, 2023, at 5:00 PM.

What’s next? The next free game is already known. The game Spelldrifter will replace Cave Story+ next week. But we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, as Cave Story+ is definitely worth a look.

Already in the trailer, it becomes clear: This is a game for fans who want a bit of retro feeling. It’s a classic that originally released in 2004 for PC and has been ported multiple times in the following years, ultimately optimized as Cave Story+. This version was then released in 2011 on Steam.

And there, the game has enjoyed great popularity among its players for years. Looking at the current numbers, we find:

• 92% positive reviews on Steam with 4,217 reviews since the release in 2011 (via Steam)
• 93% positive reviews in the last 30 days (with only 15 reviews)

On the Metacritic platform, the PC version of the game scores an 83 from critics, and an 8.3 for the user score (via Metacritic).

Overall, there is positive feedback for the indie jewel. In reviews, the gameplay with challenging jumping passages and numerous weapons, reminiscent of classic games like Metroid, is particularly praised.

But the story, characters, and music also receive positive feedback. At the same time, the game exudes a nostalgic flair that fans of the good old pixel games appreciate.

However, one should definitely be prepared for a certain challenge, as the game can be quite tough. If you enjoy such a retro experience, you should check out the game. However, if you are not fond of pixel graphics and skill-demanding jumping passages, you might want to look for other games instead.
