Hori is launching an officially licensed wireless controller for the PS4 from Sony. Its design is reminiscent of the bulky Xbox One gamepads.
The topic of “controllers” divides console players:
- While some swear by the classic PS4 DualShock with the central analog sticks and will not accept any other gamepad layout at home,
- others prefer the “bulkier” Xbox controller with the offset analog sticks.
It’s often said that such controllers in the Xbox layout fit better in hand – ultimately, that is probably a matter of taste.
For all of you who are gaming on the PS4 but like to have something more in hand and prefer asymmetrical analog sticks, Hori (Japan) has now developed the controller “Onyx”.
What can the Onyx controller do?
The Onyx controller is an officially licensed product from Sony. According to the PlayStation blog, the controller is compatible with all PS4 systems, including the PS4 Pro. Onyx was designed to offer all PS4 players a wider selection so they can find the controller that fits their unique playstyle, according to Sony.
The somewhat bulkier controller offers all the basic functions of a regular DualShock 4. Here are the special features listed:
- Wireless
- Ergonomically shaped
- Large grips
- Bluetooth connectivity
- Dual vibration motors
- Asymmetrical sticks
Onyx has been on the market since January 15, 2018. It costs around 60 euros, similar to the standard PS4 controller.

That Onyx closely resembles the Xbox design is, of course, not something Sony mentions. But no one can really dispute that…
