The opening of Destiny 2 has been revised for the free-to-play version “New Light”. Destiny veterans will find this new introduction very familiar.
This is how the opening has changed: Many of you will know the original opening of Destiny 2: The city is attacked and destroyed by the Cabal under the leadership of Dominus Ghaul, and the Traveler is captured. But this changes for the New Light version of Destiny 2.
In the new opening, the freshly created Guardians start just like in Destiny 1 in the old Cosmodrome. There, they are greeted with the usual “Eyes up, Guardian!” and must fight their way through the ruins of the old space station to reach the abandoned ship.
Some elements of the D1 opening have been changed. The Guardians do not need to repair the ship, for example, and the Tower looks like in Destiny 2. But overall, it is a Destiny déjà vu.
New Guardians will have access to these features: As seen in the video, the Tower is not destroyed and serves as a social hub for the new Guardians. This is already the new Tower that the Guardians have claimed after the original Tower was destroyed at the beginning of Destiny 2.
There, they can accept the questline called “New Light” which shows them the basic functions of Destiny 2 and guides them through the world. For example, the new Guardians will visit Earth and Dervim Kay.
The missions are not mandatory but still useful, as at the end of them the level of the new Guardians is raised from 750 to 770.

Gradually, the new Guardians can start a variety of activities. These include, among others:
- Story missions from Destiny 2, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind
- Strikes
- Bounties
- Gambit
- All PvP content
