The test embargo for the Xbox One X has been lifted. The first opinions on Microsoft’s new super console are pouring in online. But does it deliver on its promises? We have looked at the first reviews and provide you with an overview!
Native 4K, HDR, 12GB GDDR5 RAM and UHD drive – Microsoft promises a console of superlatives with the Xbox One X. It will not only be the most powerful Xbox of all time, but the most powerful console ever.

The console will be released on November 7, 2017, but curious gamers can already get an overview of the first test reports, as an embargo on this has recently been lifted.
The reactions from the specialist press are euphoric
The tech experts from Digital Foundry, as well as authors from Gamespot, IGN and others, have already extensively engaged with the new console. We have gathered a few quotes:
- Gamespot – “For those who have a 4K TV at home but don’t have a current console, the Xbox One X is a great choice.”
- IGN – “It’s hard to believe that Microsoft’s exclusive title Gears of War 4 runs so smoothly and looks so good on a box that costs less than half of a high-end PC.”
- Digital Foundry – “It runs at a perfect 60 fps, even though there’s a lot going on on screen. And still no stutters!”
- Destructoid – “For exclusive titles, I will continue to return to the PS4 – but I will definitely check out multiplatform games on the Xbox!”
- Dualshockers – “If you’re a multi-platform gamer and don’t mind paying extra for a premium experience, the Xbox One X gets a recommendation from us.”
- Polygon – “The Xbox One X is undeniably the best console for multiplatform titles. However, since too few titles have been optimized for the console so far, I can’t recommend it given the high price.”
- Ars Technica – “Grab it if you want to play selected titles in 4K – if not, get a cheaper console or a more versatile PC.”
Even in German-speaking countries, some sites were able to test the Xbox One X:
- GamePro – “Very high performance in a compact space, and at relatively low noise levels and good energy efficiency.”
- Heise – “The first titles make an excellent graphical impression. Due to the high storage demands of 4K games, however, users should consider purchasing an additional external hard drive.”
In general, all testers agree: The Xbox One X is a great piece of hardware. Even players equipped only with a Full HD TV will enjoy it. The Xbox One X can also natively output the common monitor format of 1440p, as Microsoft confirmed via Twitter:
Only the noise development during the playback of UHD disks is criticized. Moreover, the 4K-optimized games are extremely storage-hungry. Gears of War 4 and Halo 5 take up more than 100 GB; with a built-in hard drive of 1TB, you will sooner or later have to think about an external hard drive.
If you want to get hands-on with the Xbox One X, you can do so starting November 7, 2017. The console is available for around 500 Euros. Here’s a link to an offer on Amazon:
