The most popular class in World of Warcraft is well-known. A rework and a strong class fantasy make for a clear winner.
In World of Warcraft, there are now 13 classes to choose from, among which players must decide. However, the distribution is not as even as one might assume. Because one class outperforms all others – and some are even really far behind.
The clear winner: The Paladin. No other class is played more.
Where do the data come from? We obtained the data from “Data of Azeroth”, which analyzes millions of WoW characters from Blizzard’s arsenal. If you filter these characters by various criteria – for example, sorting by class and only including those who have reached the maximum level (level 80) – the following distribution emerges:
Since most likely leveled their “main” first in The War Within, this list should be quite indicative.
The findings:
- With 13.1%, the Paladin is at the absolute top of popularity and is played 4 times more often than the last-placed class.
- Hunters and Druids share 2nd place with 11.1% each.
- Only 3.7% play Rogues.
- Callers are in last place with 3.2%.
Paladin has a strong power fantasy
Why is the Paladin so popular? Because he is completely OP. There are several reasons for this. On one hand, the Paladin has a quite strong “class fantasy” that many players simply enjoy. Additionally, Paladins can be “everything”: Tanks, Healers, or DPS. They can flexibly fulfill any role, have a secure place in any group, and can also tackle many challenges in the open world that other classes would fail at alone.
It should also have an effect that the Paladin had a rework relatively late in the last expansion “Dragonflight,” in which almost all talents were revised. This has led to a true flood of Paladins. As it seems, many have stuck with this “new main”.
Why is the Caller so unpopular? The unpopularity of the Caller is also due to several factors. On one hand, the Caller is the youngest class, which was only introduced in Dragonflight. Many simply stuck with their “old” mains. Additionally, the Caller has a rather unusual play style and is also bound to a single race, namely the Dracthyr. This combination has resulted in very few deciding to choose a Caller as their main so far.
