A new nerf for the current final boss of World of Warcraft is live. Especially small raid groups benefit from this and now have it easier.
Even though the current raid “Amirdrassil, Hope of the Dream” is certainly not the most difficult in the history of World of Warcraft, there are still some challenging passages. Particularly, the final boss Fyrakk is significantly tougher than the previous bosses and requires a lot of coordination – already on normal difficulty, and even more on heroic.
Especially smaller raid groups had their problems here.
What was the problem? Fyrakk is comparatively easy to defeat with a large group. With 25 or even 30 players in the raid, the mechanics are manageable and neither DPS characters nor healers are overwhelmed. However, this changes when the number of players in the group decreases. Then the performance of the individual heroes must significantly increase to win the fight. An “unfair” disadvantage that should not occur in flexible raids.
What was changed? Blizzard made five changes to Fyrakk that come into play for small groups. The adjustments in detail are:
- “In Flames” now targets fewer player characters.
- “Screaming Soul” has fewer hit points for smaller groups.
- “Spirit of the Kaldorei” now has fewer maximum hit points for smaller groups.
- “Flame” deals less damage for smaller groups.
- The absorption shield of “Corruption” is lower for smaller groups.
In summary, it can be said: Smaller groups need to deal less damage and provide less healing to manage the fight.
How do these problems arise? Since all difficulties except Mythic scale with the number of characters, bosses can be differently challenging to handle. However, to ensure that the fight does not become too easy with an increasing number of players, not only do the boss’s hit points increase, but so does the damage caused by his abilities.
But there’s more: Depending on the number of players, the number of characters affected by abilities changes. While in a group size of 10 perhaps only 2 players receive a strong debuff, in a group size of 20 it can already be 4 players.
This becomes problematic when these debuffs bring effects that reduce the space for fighting or require more movement, as more effects need to be avoided.
Especially at the “Breaking Points”, i.e., the threshold where a mechanic affects more or fewer players, it often leads to the unpleasant situation where raid leaders decide to either downsize or upsize the group – depending on the mechanic.
Nerfs like the ones mentioned above can help reduce these problems and in this case also allow smaller groups to defeat the boss.
Have you defeated Fyrakk on normal or heroic difficulty? Or are you part of the absolute elite who has already mastered it mythically without any issues?
