The Orc Garrosh in World of Warcraft was not always planned as the leader of the Iron Horde – his army looked very different at one point.
Many things in World of Warcraft have undergone a significant alteration of the story over the years to make more sense in the overall context of the universe. However, there were also many plot lines that were briefly considered and then discarded. Those who remember “Warlords of Draenor” know that Garrosh united the Iron Horde – but that was not planned from the beginning. One of the first ideas was that Garrosh would unite the “Bastard” races (“Mongrel”) and lead them into battle: Goblins, Gnolls, Troggs, and more.
There were already some concept drawings for these considerations to give the old races a sense of threat again and to explain how such a union of these very different species could even come about.
The advantage here would have been that every player from Warcraft already knows these races from the early days and some might have wondered: What has happened to the little threats?
Cortyn says: An actually cool idea, that would have required a lot of work to present it convincingly. Because if we are honest, the last time we really “feared” Goblins, Troggs, and Gnolls was when we were in the level range of 20-40 and desperately looking for the entrance to the Deadmines or Uldaman.
Nevertheless, it would certainly have been interesting to give all these races more history and a fresh look to let them line up under the motto “even the small ones are a great threat together”. Honestly, I am happy with how it turned out with Garrosh now – as an Orc fanatic, I liked him very much.
