The name of the princess appealed to the couple so much that they named their daughter after the character:

Zelda then shares that some children at school made fun of her special name. During that time, the girl told her mother that she would change her name once she turned 18.
But now Zelda likes her special name: “But then I loved it again,” she says. Her environment keeps telling her that it is the coolest name ever.
Her father jokingly remarks that she is lucky that Zelda was the couple’s favorite game: “You’re lucky you aren’t named Mario, Luigi, or Samus.”
However, father and daughter quickly agree on an absolute no-go name: Peach would not work in their view.
“Oh no, Peach would be a difficult name for a girl,” says Robin Williams. His daughter laughs and agrees: “I wouldn’t see the end of the torment with that [name].”
However, it’s still a better name than Ocarina or Epona, Zelda says. At the thought of naming their daughter after a horse, both grin.
Later, Robin Williams speaks once more about the name Zelda and concludes: “It is magical, just like she […].” While saying this, he points to his daughter, who sits next to him smiling.
