The science-fiction MMORPG Project Genom launched with a lot of potential in 2016 in early access – but it was way too early. Now the developers are trying to save the game with the technology SpatialOS.
A premature launch of an online game can lead to massive problems, as seen with Project Genom. Launched full of potential, it is now hardly played anymore.
Internal Problems
What happened? Project Genom sounded very interesting. A sci-fi MMORPG where you could improve your hero through gene manipulation and cyber implants and explore a vast world, even with vehicles. Adventures in space were also planned.
But then at the end of 2016, there was a dispute within the team, which even led to Project Genom having to be removed from Valve’s platform. Since then, the game has been a perpetual construction site. There is hardly any progress, and players are leaving. Currently, according to Steamcharts, there are only about 1.7 players active at the same time.
SpatialOS is supposed to fix it
This is how Project Genom is to be saved: The developers are now returning after months of silence. They are still working on optimizing, expanding, and improving the game. The technology SpatialOS is supposed to help with this.
- The team now wants to develop a stable version of Project Genom with SpatialOS
- It is supposed to be another redesign of the game
- The sales will be paused for now
- Server access will be limited
- SpatialOS should allow the team to realize the vision even with a few employees
- The team plans to compensate all customers as soon as a stable version is available
What is SpatialOS? SpatialOS is a technology from the company Improbable, which allows small development studios to create and manage vast online worlds and to constantly expand them. SpatialOS is used in the MMO Worlds Adrift.
Players remain skeptical
This is how players react: After the mixed development phase, players are understandably skeptical. There are voices that encourage the developers, but there are also critical players who are particularly angry due to the lack of communication over the past months.
- For instance, Hammerschaedel says on Steam: “No releases, just talk. No wonder such things happen.”
- Sckiz1, on the other hand, says: “As long as you compensate those who supported you, it’s okay. Keep working, life is a journey, not a race.”
