On October 30, 2025, Season 4 of The Witcher was released on Netflix. Some fans dove right in to watch the new episodes of the series. They come to a rather clear conclusion.
Fans of The Witcher had to wait two years since the third season of the series. But that has now come to an end. Eight new episodes were released all at once on Netflix. They continue the adventures of the Witcher Geralt of Rivia and are primarily based on the second novel “Sword of Destiny” by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
There was a lot of discussion beforehand about the lead actor. Because while Geralt was portrayed by Henry Cavill in the first three seasons – a true Witcher fan – he has now handed over the role and will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth.
This led to criticism from fans, who even demanded in a petition the return of Cavill. All pleas and begging were of no avail, as the decision was final. Now viewers finally know how the new actor fares as Geralt. And they share their opinions about the new season as a whole.
Not the hoped-for continuation, but …
What do the fans say? Just a few hours after the release of the new episodes, some viewers were probably already through thanks to binge-watching. They are actively sharing their impressions on Reddit, explaining what they liked and what they didn’t.
Looking at the various voices, one thing becomes clear: Many viewers are confused, as the new season feels different from the previous ones. At the center of the criticism is the script along with its dialogues, which don’t seem to fit into the world.
Overall, the tone is now different – this had already been hinted at, as the creators wanted to portray Geralt as significantly more emotional and humorous. Some find the production quality has declined, leading to harsh judgments:
- “God, the writing is terrible. I’ve read better fanfiction. Is this supposed to come from a professional author?”, wonders Hyper_Mazino on Reddit.
- MummyBear337 notes on Reddit after a short watch: “Half of Episode 1 is gone, and something is off. Not just Liam. The tone of the series, the characters, the dialogues… I feel like this is a completely different show.”
- “You can see the actors’ lip movements don’t match the spoken words,” criticizes jpp1974 the technical execution on Reddit.
- “Nothing fits together. The action choreography is very cheesy. […] The chemistry between the main actors is not the same. It feels like a body without a soul. The story progresses… but to me it feels lifeless,” writes fugaciousredamancy on Reddit.
Is it all bad now? Even though many disappointed and negative voices can be found, there is also clear praise. This is often due to none other than lead actor Liam Hemsworth, who was the biggest point of criticism before the season came out. After viewers actually saw him in the role, their opinions have changed:
- “Liam is better than I expected; that’s a pleasant surprise,” says eileenOZ on Reddit.
- “The series is mediocre because it is mediocre, but to be honest, if Liam had been Geralt from the start, the fans would be satisfied. He’s doing quite well,” explains thalandhor.
- “Honestly, I had no problem with Liam as Geralt at all. The fight scenes were good,” believes zandrew in his post on Reddit.
- “Okay, I didn’t expect Liam to look so much better than in the trailer and in photos. I think he’s doing a phenomenal job with what he’s been given and the shoes he had to fill,” concludes GWNVKV on Reddit.
By the way, critics find a similar conclusion. On Rotten Tomatoes, the new season has a rating of 50% – here the audience rates it with 25% (as of October 30, 2025, 5:45 PM)
